Hey everyone, new member here. I love my '98 tacoma, it was my first car and it's still my daily driver. I bought her used for $2,000 with 160,000 miles and she's treated me like a king ever since.

That being said, I don't know much about this truck. I've recently done some work on it myself.
(new alternator, master cylinder, brake lines, drums and rotors, pads and shoes, about to replace cv axles) I can't find any information on if this truck has keyless entry, the keys I got with the truck were duplicates, probably made at home depot. There was no radio fob to speak of.

Is there a way for me to tell if this truck has keyless entry, and if so, where I can get a new fob?

If you have stickers on the window that say "toyota security", or a black button (where the optional button things are to the left of he turn stalk) that says "security" and has a little speaker looking thing below it, you have keyless entry. If you remove the driver side kick panel and there's a black box behind it (will say rs3000) you have keyless entry.

I'm willing to bet if you have power locks, you probably at least can "hack" a keyless entry. I remember reading somewhere that most manufacturers don't actually use different wiring harnesses/equipment for the different option packages (for the most part). It's apparently cheaper for all the vehicles to be basically the same because it's easier to manufacture them on the line that way. You're basically just paying for the factory to "enable" those options.

Things like the factory "alarm" is just disabled, and you can hack it to get the security system minus the glass break sensor (and that you can probably add, too).

But yeah, under the kick panel you should have a black box with rs3000 as vasinvictor said.

I also just picked up my 97 and it appears to have keyless but no fobs. I also found an aftermarket remote start unit under the dash that has been disconnected.

How does one program these fobs if I grab one on eBay?

Remove your kick panel on the drivers side, if there's a black box that says rs3000 or rs3200 you have keyless entry, if not there's a audiovox aa-925 on eBay right now, that's what I run and it works great.

You can retrofit keyless pretty easily - if you've ever done car stereo, it's similar wiring.

Kits on eBay and other internet sources.

Might be a cheaper route than trying to hit up the dealer for a fob.
