I've search and read all I can on this and have yet to find someone who actually finished this install after posting about it.

I have a base model (think SR) Tacoma and would like to add some type of keyless entry, maybe even stock. I just want a way to not have to put the key in the driver door to unlock the passenger door. My truck is a manual too so is there any issue with that?

Can I just get a "clicker" from the dealership and have it programmed to my truck (buddy works at the dealership) ? Thanks.

You'll have to determine if the truck is prewired for such.

Even if prewired, it may have missing components in the harness, like the receiver. I'm assuming the PLs are already there since it seems you unlock the passenger door from the driver side with the key?

Would seem your buddy could dig into the issue for you. The parts guys should have something that shows what would have to be added if a paying customer wanted to have the dealer install this feature on their SR before heading out the door.

My SR had keyless. But I think to add simple keyless and alarm would be like $199 if not less.

I'm pretty sure that 199 would be less than OEM Toyota stuff. Unless you find used parts.

I'm surprised search didn't dig up any of my posts on this.

Key fob receiver is part of the TPMS sensor. SR trucks have a different type with no fob receiver. The unit costs like $1000 and as far as I can tell isn't properly wired from OEM. SRs have different, gimped wiring harnesses.

At this point it looks like aftermarket is your only option.

So, do you want keyless entry like on the fancy models, where you grab the door handle and it unlocks? Or just a keyfob like you get in the convenience package? I got that with mine, and it couldn't have been that much extra, so it can't be that much extra hardware.

Convenience Package (Cruise Control and Remote Keyless Entry) was a $480 addition on mine. Not a smart key for keyless start.

    W/O = With Out

I'm not sure if it's just the Utility Package's harness that's been gimped more than regular SRs or not... since I don't have access to a "regular" type SR to pry all the trim panels off of.

Does 'w/o smart key' mean just the key is not included, or does it mean that the receiver doesn't have the smart key function?

Seems odd that they'd offer 3 discreet configurations. Nothing (and no ability to add anything), 'standard' keyless, smart key keyless.

Making keyless part of the TMPS module is odd (to me) but I guess it's tricky too. Wanting to keep folks from tinkering with it.

Why all these "can I add XXX to my SR".Is it that hard to just buy an SR5 if you want the SR5 options.

Parts catalogs are usually worded in such a way that you're talking about the truck/car you are replacing a part on. W/O would mean the truck has no smart key, not that this replacement part you're getting shipped does not include a smart key.

I dunno why they do it that way either. I know for a fact they gimped the SR fog light harness but that's an easy fix I have documented. I'd wager there's a similar roadblock for other stuff like a key fob (other than that price tag!) because I've even noticed my utility package doesn't have lighted mirrors on its sun visors, and no wires for that. Also, no wires for rear door speakers.

Because I'm a piece of shit. :D I paid $22k for my Utility package. Added TRDOR Fogs (~$200) TRDOR Suspension ($250), and intermittent wipers ($80). Even after paying ~$600 to add shit to it, I'm still miles short of SR5 pricing.

It's because secondhand OEM stuff is cheap, and so is labor if you DIY. Far cheaper than paying an extra $4,000 or so for an options package with things you might not care about.

Id rather just pay up front and get it back on resale. To each his own

Link please? Fogs are the only thing I have interest in that my '13 base 5 lug + convenience package doesn't appear to be prewired (at least underhood) for. I know you are talking '16, but there may be similarities.

Mine was prewired for the backup camera, the fancy rearview mirror and I've added intermittents.

I understand your buying philosophy. I bought used. For me it's a 20 yr plan. Not thinking about resale at all. Bought what I needed, and have slowly improved a few things along the way that seem useful to me.

Viper has a keyless fob that can be added. I was quoted less than $250 including install.

I'm planning to install this.. I love my basic sr, but having to use the key to open the door is getting annoying.. for those how say "buy an sr5": this is my very first vehicle and I couldn't afford more..

I have the most basic one because it's the only one with a manual the dealer could get. My options were limited at the time. I don't even have back seats but I do want them.

I just want a clicker that can unlock both door and relock both doors. I just mentioned stock because it would be nice. I've read some stuff on the viper. Looks like a professional install is what everyone does over diy

I lucked out with my SR since it came with the convenience package, but I had no idea about the various options at each level since I bought mine used. There's a few confusing things that Toyota did, like I have heated mirrors, power windows and power door locks but no intermittent wipers (well, until last Friday). The fact that they chose to make one trim level not have that option and then re-tooled their manufacturing lines to make a special gimped switch... how does that not end up costing them money?

SR's are a solid value. I'm also on the 20 year truck plan so screw resale. Speaking of which, does anyone know someone who might want to buy a 96 Ranger? :D
