After 13 years of taking care of it, my key fob was forgotten in a pair of pants and it did a full wash cycle (not dryer). It was full of water when I opened it up. I’m letting it dry in the sun. What are my chances it will work again?

My wife has wash and dried her Subaru key fob three times and it still works. Let it dry thoroughly and if you see any corrosion use something like Deox-It to clean it off. Use a Q-tip to clean out the plastic casing. Check battery voltage and replace if needed and then try it out.

Mine went through the wash also. Did just like you, took it apart for a day after a good pat dry and blower. works like it never happened years later

    90% chance.
Mines been through the washer 3 times.
    Maybe more……..

There is a gasket in there. It’s actually the “buttons” that is the gasket.
If water didn’t pour out when you opened it up, you’re probably fine.

Pull the battery and drop it in a bag of rice and let it sit overnight, should be good to go.

I used a hair dryer on low heat the first time.
Then just blew it out with my mouth the next few times.
There really isn’t any areas for water to sit and collect once you open it up.
I’m still on the same battery since 2010 when I bought my truck.
I’d say it’s the orange battery. My truck is a 2007, bout it in 2010.

FWIW, anyone who owns a 2nd Gen Honda Ridgeline, the fob is indeed water resistant.
    I washed those as well:anonymous:

I have some super lube, silicone grease. I use a Q-Tip and put a light film on the interface between the button sealing surface and the circuit board when I take them apart to change the battery. Yes, we keep our cars that long.
Let us know how it does!

Mine's been through the washer and dryer multiple times. Still works after 16 years. I think I have replaced the batteries once, maybe twice.

Water got behind the buttons and on the circuit. I blasted the whole thing with electronic cleaner to hopefully blow out the contacts before putting it in the sun. We’ll see.

I'd put your chances at near 100% that it works.

I've done it -- with several Toyota or Lexus keys or fobs. I blow it out with compressed air and put it out in the sunshine for an afternoon. Easy-peasy. Taking the battery out is better and even smarter.

What are the chances Toyota didn't think we'd end up doing this? They planned for it fershure.

You guys are all correct. After a couple of hours in the sun I put in a new battery (still had the original one), snapped it back together and all buttons work. Toyota quality even with key fobs.

Years ago I accidentally dropped a company (flip) cell phone in the sink. It wasn't under water, but got quite wet and didn't turn on. I heard about the rice method and tried it. I was surprised that about 7 hours later it worked.

Now I know these Toyota remotes used the common 2032 battery.
