I bought my 19 Tacoma used from a Toyota dealership and I only got 1 fob and a physical key. The physical key only opens the door. Without the fob the truck is a brick which is infuriating.

I called Toyota and they quoted me $180 for a new fob, $40 for another key that goes inside, and $140 for programming. I kindly informed them that was a total rip-off.

Anybody know of a cheaper way to get a replacement fob? Or a way to start and drive the truck without it? I just need a backup if I ever lose the fob.

I’m about to install an N2 remote start kit with app control. I think that only allows you to start it with your phone though. I don’t think it can work like a digital key.

I was going to say a local locksmith can do it. It's still not cheap, but a lot less expensive than the dealer.

So Tom's Key can make a key from a photo? That's a new one on me! Looks like the fob with a programmer rental is a good deal.

Have you had a key and/or fob made? Just curious. TIA!

    Interesting video. Seems easy enough.

Yes, I sent Toms a photo of my key and they cut me one. I also got a 2nd remote from them, key fit like the original and the programming was super easy with what they sent

Awesome! Still have both keys and fobs, but for that price a backup might be a good investment!

I can vouch for Toms Key programmer. You need one working fob to make up to a total of four working fobs. I too had one fob with emergency key, plus the tailgate key. I was concerned about losing it; breaking it.

When you get the programmer, you erase all other fobs but the one you have, then add each one back (or your new ones).

Tom charges extra for key by photo. You can do better if you can tolerate aftermarket fobs. I cracked my working fob open, and googled what was on the circuit board and found a seller…. Got 3 for $120. Rented the programmer. Also installed a pop n lock for the tailgate, so I don’t need a key to open it. I never got the keys cut for the 3 after market fobs. I now have 4 working fobs for my Taco.

These fobs may be compatible for you. I got mine from locksmithkeyless during a Black Friday sale last year...

    https://www.locksmithkeyless.com/products/2012-2019-toyota-smart-key-3b-fcc-hyq14fba-2110-ag

    https://www.uhs-hardware.com/produc...14fba-ag-board-2110-pcb-aftermarket-pack-of-2

You will still need to program them. I never got the emergency keys cut.

Again the fobs from locksmithkeyless worked for me.... YMMV.

I think I have one of those. We bought our Taco used and it only had one key/fob. It looks exactly like the one you linked. Since our Taco was being sold as Toyota Certified Used the dealer had to provide two fobs. So after a week or so they gave us a normal one with the Toyota logo, etc. I cannot be certain, but I think the one you linked is also compatible with ours.

Throw a remote start in there from N2, with their long range package you get two of their long distance fobs that you program to your truck yourself.

This is slightly off topic, but I wish someone made a dual FOB replacement enclosure, so I could put my Subaru Outback and my Taco FOB electronics in a small space. I hate to have two big FOBs hanging off a key-ring. :frusty:

Maybe someone out in the ether has 3D printed one. I think the idea has legs. :taco:

That would be nice. The fob for our new Venza is half-again as big as the Taco’s. Having both in my pocket creates a bulge that looks, well, anatomically odd. :anonymous:

I’m in the same boat. I bought a 2022 last month with only one fob. Local Toyota dealer just quoted me $255 for remote, $175 to program, and $100 for a cut key that’s separate from the fob.
I thought tomskey.com was high until I talked to dealer lol. Toms is $350 + 90 (Deosit) and it has the key in the fob. I got a $200 check from the dealer towards a new fob so I guess it’s not too bad.

If you have to get another fob, consider the Lexus key card mod. Credit card size and fits in wallet.

Im in the same boat, only got 1 key/fob on my 2019 Tacoma, local locksmith just quoted me $350 for 1 set programmed.

Do I have this right: I buy the N2 remote start kit $199 and the long range remotes $159 (total $358+ship) and I'll get a remote start and 2 extra fobs. And it's all plug and play and self programable?

I won't have an extra key though, so I'll have to get one made but thats easier than the fob programming.

Might as well get the latest remote start takeover kit from Accessorides for $425 including 2 FOBS.
