Keep factory plastic bed liner, or remove and coat with Line-X ?

I don't own a garage, my Taco sits outside 24/7. I do my best to keep it clean, but its a never ending chore. I am considering to remove the plastic factory bed liner, and spray the bed with LineX for long-term rust prevention, keeping the 3 factory drain holes near the cab of course. Thoughts? Good, bad, waste of money? Will the Line-X outlive the truck ?

Have you looked under the plastic bedliner yet? Mine had a hole the size of my hand from rust, which the plastic ones tend to hide.

I would probably go with a spray in.

Nope, have not removed and inspected yet. It could be lined with 24k gold.

 

I’m new to the 2nd gen world, so someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe all of the 2nd gen beds are plastic or poly carbonate with metal bed sides bolted on. That’s the way my ‘15 is anyways.

OP seems to have a 2nd gen which have a composite bed. They are not like the 1st gen with a plastic liner over a steel bed.

 

Your bed should be composite pladtics. I could be wrong but dont think you have a liner. That is the bed. There is no metal underneath.

Gen 2 (and Gen 3) Tacoma beds are made from SMC (sheet molding compound), a composite of glass fiber and unsaturated polyester resin. It ain't gonna corrode, and there's no need, or really logic, around a drop-in or spray-on bedliner. The exterior panels are steel, of course.

A lot of folks will have the Toyota accessory bed mat, which as a "stickier" rubber keeps stuff from sliding around.

yea composite bed. if you want more "grip" in it, i rolled on some leftover bedliner (rhino liner) onto the ridges. it lasted 5 or so years and did the job well. cheap and effective.

 

Well since I got yer attention... if money was no object, and I wanted to protect my Taco forever. What else would you coat with Line-X ? I thought about an entire body spray job. kinky

 

depends where you live. in the salt belt, its tough on metal no matter what, but a fluid film would be best on frame parts. you dont want to linex over bolts and such on the underside... ill let people that live there help more on that. protect it forever by just doing general maintenance and not neglecting it.

 

I’m a bit confused. There is no plastic bed liner to remove. That plastic is your bed, not a liner.
