Jhook is better for plastic rotomoulded kayak, because the tie-down force is supported by the stronger portion of the boat.
Worst case scenario is anchoring a plastic kayak, with the bottom hull onto the roof rack bars, tensioning the front and back of the kayak against the kayak's rocker shape, and then being in the hot sun. The forces will deform the hull, often lending a crease where the roof bar contacts. Better off to invert the kayak with the water side up, ideally lining up the rack bars with bulkhead locations in the kayak.

I have a bed rack that sits below the roofline of the truck. I still use J hooks, but had to add a spacer below J hooks closest to the cab to prop that end up and clear the roof. works great so far!

I have a home built as well but yours is much cleaner looking and more functional. Any chance you have a pic of that trailer without all the yaks loaded up? I'd like to see if I can come up with something similar to allow my big hobie to load in the middle on the bottom and still have the rack setup like yours.

I don't have at the moment. I can get one in between the two bottom kayaks buy it's a small one and I have to twist it to get it in then it will lay flat. With my J hooks up I can get two more on top. But I'll try and get some pictures of it empty soon.

    Awesome thank you.

I have mine currently setup like this but I have nowhere to store seats, drives, PFDs, etc... I'm trying to figure out a better way to rearrange but the problem is the Hobie has to stay flat in the middle like that becuase it's too heavy to put in j-hooks or up on the rack.

What I don't like is the top configuration. Having those j-hooks so far out on the cross bars introduces a ton of flex in the bars when moving but I have to keep them that spread apart to get the other one in the middle. I like yours where the outer kayaks are on an angle lower on the trailer. That would allow me to stand up 1 or 2 more vertically in the middle where that Vibe is now.

My greatest fear is having my 14-foot ‘yak fly off while motoring along at 70 and killing someone. With that in mind, I suggest a dedicated set of attachments.

Well you've done the right thing to prevent that. Bow and stern lines prevent our airfoils from going airborne :)

    “It’s a truck ;-) “

Good suggestion/mod! The Yakima bow and stern tethers have a vinyl sleeve to protect the paint. Can’t see them because of the crappy photo...:anonymous:

I use Yakima cradles with rollers on the rear pair. Also using a loader that fits in hitch receiver.

Better padding, SKS lockable, foldable, etc. Depends on what you want.

Do you have the Tacoma OEM rack that you mount the JayLow to? Or you mount JayLow attachments to another rack? This is what I have: https://parts.toyota.com/p/Toyota_2019_Tacoma/Roof-Rack/70290669/PT27835170.html

I mounted another (cheaper) kayak rack to my OEM rack and the OEM rack above is wobbly. The posts on the ends of the crossbars don't seem as solid as they need to be.

Seems like JayHook or JayLow is the way to go with OEM rack. Thanks! However, do you find that the OEM is a bit wobbly? The posts on the ends of the crossbar don't seem like they secure well enough not to wobble back and forth. I guess you haven't had this issue or have been using the OEM rack for years and it's been fine?

I used it for years with no issue, though there was a small amount of play in that post your talking about, it always felt secure.

I have since moved on to a prinsu rack to fit my needs.

Nope. I have Yakima Whispbar Through Bars (no longer made) with Yakima towers. They call them JetStream now.
