The CV joint acts like a bolt that holds the bearing in / compressed. That’s why u torque the axle nut. Without the CV there there’s nothing holding the horizontal (axial?) loads.

Raptor lights overheated and ruined the temper of the axle.

Sigh... Tacoma made his truck heavy. Did not upgrade drive line, just suspension. Rory the tow guy did opposite... Made his rig light and upgraded drive line.
    A lesson should be learned.

If only he was carrying a $100 spare CV, could have been back on the trail in under an hour.

Makes me wonder what he was doing to break it, probably turned full lock and bouncing. These CVs are not that weak.

My bet is he overtorqued the nut on the end of the axle... he even mentions he just built the truck and this was the maiden trip.

    Screenshot_20220507-203130_YouTube.jpg

That is a pretty good recovery though.

so essentially you can take a shit CV and pull it apart at the lower boot and just bring that on the trail, just in case you break the stock, that is like your nut and bolt right? Might be worth getting a thrown away CV axle and doing this....

Yes it works to get you off the trail, but the outer CV joint doesn't just pull apart like the inner. You need to separate the joint or cut the shaft. You would also need the inner joint to plug the front diff.

You would almost always be much better off carrying a complete CV, unless of course you also grenade a front diff/stub shaft/ADD tube.

Yes that shaft also acts as a bolt to hold the hub assembly together. Non oem-cv shafts are fairly cheap at just about any auto parts store ($80-$120), better off just buying a good whole one as a replacement than trying to find a crap one just to disassemble for this particular reason.

If you're going to go through all of that trouble, why not bring a good CV axle to swap in?

If you were using a broken axle to hold the hub in, you would also want something to plug the giant hole left in the diff from having the CV removed.

Typically, CV's break at the joint or the shaft. I can't say I've seen any break at the hub connection (prior to this video). Not that I'm an expert in the matter.
