The Big Bear Burb was due for new tires after a great yet short lived run on the Maxxis Razr AT. My 3/4 ton Suburban basically only gets driven off-road, and towing a 10k travel trailer...sometimes at the same time. Under these conditions, tread life is always going to be compromised, so overall performance is a bigger metric for me.

Keeping things on a tight budget, I settled on the Kanati Terra Commander RTX. LT265/70R17E tires from Priority Tire came out to about $780. Had them installed on a set of Hummer H2 wheels I've had sitting in my shop for over a year. A couple of them took a fair amount of weight to balance, but they did balance smoothly. No shake or rumble at and over 60. They are a bit louder than the Maxxis, but still much more quiet than something like a Duratrac.

On road handling is a little bit squirmy due to the very tall tread lugs. 16/32" tread depth with 11/32" siping depth seems on par for this class of R/T style tire. Off-road performance is very good. Like, very good. Hitting some recently rain soaked dirt trails near my house showed that the tires just wanted to dig. The larger voids clear mud quite well, but also grab and fling gravel. At no point could I get them to break traction, even under a full throttle hill climb that has my son wide-eyed.

I'll keep this review running for updates once I get some good miles on them.

Interesting to see that you switched away from the Razrs! As always, great review.

I also ditched the Razr MT for a larger Yokohama all terrain but man Maxxis does make a great tire. I’m interested to see how these work for you in the longer term. I get the impression that Kanati’s mud tire is one of the more popular budget MTs. Not that it’s relevant to your tire but they seem to make a decently popular product.

I've been writing tire reviews in this forum for over a decade. The general consensus from the members is that it's valuable information, even if the use case is different.

    Also, I miss Salida.

Your last one helped me decide on Maxxis!
