My mileage and pep took a hit when in installed my leveling kit and bigger tires. Anyone know how much of a difference an air intake really affects a Tacoma. K&N says 18 hp increase, but that's at 5400 rpm. They run $250-$300 for the parts.

    ...too much shit to list.
There's a reason they don't show dyno charts much below 2500 RPM. You loose HP and torque on low end...where you spend most of your time driving.
Tacomas come stock with a cold air intake. All you will do is spend money and lose power in the range where you spend most of your time.

    K&N lies, through their teeth.

    If you want power, regear.

I have one and have notice a improvement in performance. Not major but it is noticeable. The sound is very noticeable and I wish it was a tad less. Worth the money IMO.

K&N is embellishing. With the stock engine, there will be no noticeable gains with the intake. It will sound louder due to the deletion of the resonator on the stock pipe, that's about it.

If a turbo or supercharger kit becomes available for this engine, the K&N intake may give the claimed 18 HP gain. The stock NA engine simply doesn't draw enough air for the stock intake to be restrictive.

I don't think its a gain per se, just better pedal response that shows on the scale as more horsepower. I notice that with my drop in air filter and then after my cat back really noticed a difference. Yes its louder too... butt dyno results are in... says way better pedal response.

Don't they run K&N in Sprint Cup cars?? I would think... make that I know they do dyno runs .. wouldn't use snake oil if there was something to it.. and many many other race series also use K&N. Haters gonna hate.. just sayin.

Race car engines do a lot more breathing than a Tacoma engine, and race teams likely get paid by K&N to use their product.

I have one on my 2nd gen 4.0 does it do anything? Meh, probably not, but I like the sound and it does feel more responsive. Snake oil or not I like it and that's what matters to me.

Spint Cup cars run a different engine package than our slow poke Tacoma's....just sayin.

Noted but if the filter didn't help with performance they wouldn't be wasting space and weight.. not even for sponsor money... they would go get another filter that works better. Pretty 100% sure of that. I've been in a Nascar garage after hours.... they do nothing with anything that doesn't make HP and spend A LOT of time figuring this stuff out.

The "official product of" usually means they wrote the biggest check. Worked for a company that was the "official XYZ" of a trade organization. They put that sponsorship up for bid. Purely a cash deal. I do think it helps in a high performance engine, I'm curious to see what Tacoma owners that bought one felt the difference was.

A sprint cup car is a world away from a stock Tacoma. Whereas a cup car that is built for maximum/increased hp, it would benefit from an air intake. But to simply slap one on a stock Tacoma and expect any hp gain is pure rubbish. With that being said, all air intakes are a waste of money and K&N is just peddling snake oil to the masses who want to drink the kool-aid.

However, if you want increased noise, an imaginary increase in hp on the butt-dyno, want to drop your hard earned cash on placebo effect, then by all means do so.

I've had a few of them.

They do nothing but add noise.

They also don't filter air as well as the OEM filters.

And again, a Nascar quality vehicle is a world away from a good ole stock Tacoma.

I'm running a K&N CAI on my 02 Dbl cab 4 cyl but I'm also running a supercharger and header . I notice a big difference in power between a friends stock 4 cyl and mine plus I like very audible blower whine under boost
