Purchased new 2017 TRD Off-Road this past October. Installed new K&N 77-9039KP air intake. Dealer verified install was correct. December got check engine light and traction and cruise control turned off. Dealer tested truck and found remitting issues with direct and multiport injection. Toyota engineers thought it might be bad gas. Emptied tank and filed with high test and fuel system cleaner. One month later same issue. Toyota warranty replaced all direct and multiport components. Service manager had an idea. He put the standard air box back on the truck and all tests came back perfect. Put the K&N back on and tests were at almost failure (whatever that means). My thought and question, could the K&N filter have had too much oil from the factory and somehow messed up the mass air flow sensor? Just got the truck back from the dealer today after 2 weeks in the shop. Should I purchase different MAS that's better suited for the K&N intake? Anyone else, having similar issues?

Sounds to me like the solution is to forget the K&N.

Ditch the he K&N system. Dealer already proved it to be faulty and you're lucky you got that all taken care of under warranty. Why do you want a different MAF? It's going to do the same thing over. You've answered all your own questions along with the dealer. A new MAF won't help.

^^^ What he said... Get the TRD Performance intake ... its got a better filter lets more COOL air in than what you bought there... and it's designed by Toyota. Btm line it works and the K&N doesn't.

The writing is on the wall right there bro and the dealer handed it to you on a platter. I'd go back to stock before something breaks and then you pay. Or get the TRD intake.

That K&N design is pulling in some WARM air from the engine compartment. The TRD only pulls in cool air from the fender well outside of the engine bay as does the OEM box. You can get a drop in TRD filter that will do at least as much as that K&N deal you have there.

Not buying the oil MAF thing... it's probably something else and when the dealer exhausts all options and gives you documentation your setup ain't working, well hey... put on your common sense hat and do what you're gut it telling you to do. Next issue likely on you bro, just sayin...

I have had the same K&N on my 2016 TRD Off-road for 20,000 miles. No issues at all. Are all of your clamps tightened down? Any hissing noises?

For the rest of you, the guy is asking for help, not someone to bash K&N

Not sure who's bashing? I'm familiar with the issues with oiled filters in CAI as a former dealer tech. I've come across this issue often in customer cars.

They have their place, but not in a daily driver where people usually rely on a dealership to take care of basic maintenance. There is a difference on how much crap accumulates on the MAF, and it's all dependent on the environment you drive it.
The casual consumer never realizes the issues it causes because they're filled by the claims of yada..yada..and people fall for it. The issues are the ones with this cylindrical filter style. The panel filter that drops in to the airbox still utilizing the factory secondary charcoal filter has less issues with oil fouling the MAF.

The help and suggestions were already made by the dealer and some with actual experience. You're lucky you haven't come across this yet. The OP situation isn't an isolated case. I believe the TRD filter is also oiled, but the plastic TRD airbox upper housing also has the secondary filter.

6 months not a single issue with mine. Had same type filter on many vehicles with no problems. In fact had 2010 Shelby that came with identical setup from factory.

To answer one of your questions, i have no doubt the filter was over oiled out of the box. Ive seen these things saturated when even the instructions say to lightly oil.

That said I haven't ran an oiled air filter in decades; since the theory they were damaging MAF sensors over a decade ago or more. Just run a dry element filter on a true cai.

My experience with K&N filters that I found was they did a couple of different things. One the oil. That stuff caused issue with the MAS. The other problem I found, it that it can change the air flow over the MAS and cause it to misread and cause driveability issue. Occasional stumbles, poor acceleration. Once removed and original was reinstalled, all the problems when away. They are really just noise makers. The don't have any other benefits.

K&N filters are great and nobody who trashes them here is right ...

...regarding their use on carbureted engines. They work great for those, but after having to replace a MAS on my 1st gen due to oil contamination, I wouldn’t use them ever again for anything with MAS either, listen to the others here regarding it, they are correct.

Hey guys I had the same issue about a year ago with my black hawk K&N intake. Same warning ⚠️ signs and everything. I was pissed so, I contacted K&N directly and they took my truck in for observation for about a week and gave me a loaner (true story).

The outcome was the K&N intakes just gives TOO MUCH AIR, giving the sensor a false reading. K&N ended up have to modify my intake piecing two different intakes to make one. By doing so it controlled the airflow but, still gave me the Aggressive Rohr and performance.

Here are a few pictures of warning ⚠️ signs and my original Black Hawk intake. I’ll take pictures tomorrow and post what they installed for the fix.

Contact K&N ask for Kyle. My case number should still be on file K&N (#4161). Customer Service was awesome and everything was free. I have nothing negative to say about K&N!

Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

I've run oil type filters for 8 years now with no issues.
I have always been careful to not over oil and when cleaning to make sure it fully dries before reinstall.

You can always see if an AFE dry filter fits.
