John and crew and IPT Performance Transmissions just finished my VB upgrade today and I am luvin' it! Besides the actual S/C, it's probably my favorite performance mod - right up there with re-gearing to 4.56

John is awesome to deal with : knowledgeable, super friendly - even offered to loan me his car to drive around during the install to save me rental - now that's customer service!:D

He listened carefully to my need to not have super hard shifts so as not to get the wife complaining and that exactly what I got. Shifts as quick and firm but definitely not too firm - just right [IMG] Accelerating feels so good now - I hated the lazy shifts from the stock AT.

If you live within driving distance of Hawthorne NJ - or even if you don't - I'd highly recommend having the VBU done and done by John at IPT. You won't regret it. As a bonus, he adopted the world's friendliest cat to keep you company while you wait.

I am seriously contemplating the VBU. I talked to John at IPT about shipping my valve body but then I will be without my Taco for a week or so. How long did it take for John to complete the entire VBU? I think I can drive up there if he can complete in a day.

    Thanks,
    Kal

    Okay, sounds pretty cool!

Eggbert, you have a warrenty on that truck. I also have a 2014 with a SC. I love it. Otherwise my Sport Tacoma is stock. I'm a city driver, very little high speed roads, rarely do I get on the interchange in my city where I would drive 65-90 MPH. No off road. I'm a city boy who likes to put stuff in the back for yard work and minor home improvement.

What does it do? Makes shift points at better RPMS? Better milage? Why did you regear? FAT tires? Or is it all about off the line being cool with your buds? What would happen if the tranny took a dump and you took it in for warranty work?

I like the idea but tell me more please?

Hey Conum, I was gonna post a good link explaining VBU, bur gearcruncher beat me to it :)

Have you ever floor your truck, the SC kicks in and then the tranny slips? Doesn't happen to me anymore after the VBU. Can't recommend it highly enough. I think John at IPT has a 1 yr warranty, but to be honest after all these mods I don't anything except the frame is still covered heheh.

As far as regearing, I'm not sure I would do it again. After I threw on some 33"s, it would really bug me how sluggish it felt compared to stock and this was AFTER the SC. After regear, no hunting for gears going uphill and it's much faster off the line, but I hate driving it on highway > 65MPH since the RPM is around 3k and with the catback, the drone is annoying.

I haven't heard anything bad about IPT. Longevity, strength, etc.

Lvl 10 on the other hand.. I've heard some horror stories.
