it depends on the cop. for example, it might be okay to use your cell phone in your state while driving but if you come to CA you better hide it or else it's a ticket. I had a customer who tried to use that arguement against the cops. if your in CA better follow CA laws. another example, it might be okay to carry a loaded gun in Texas but if your in CA you better think twice. I had a customer that asked a cop while he was in my store. I guess he had a CCW for Arizona. He said if it'll be okay since he's just driving by. The cop said, better make sure it's int he trunk and not loaded while he's in CA.

^ yea but those are all violations that dont pertain to modifications to the vehicle, those are tickets for the immediate action of the driver/operator of the vehicle. The physical nature of the vehicle, on the other hand, cannot be hung up, or unloaded, prior to crossing a border, a cell phone or gun can. Otherwise there would be garages and shops littered around the border doing last minute modifications on vehicles crossing thru Cali

this guy had tint (physical attribute to his car) and he was in the military but he still got a ticket for the car even though his car was registered in Texas:eek: where apparently they have less strict laws. Read the last response. It sounds familiar:D. Also, my cousin works for the district attorney office as a lawyer and from what she's saying from her law terms it seems about right. I would agree with what your trying to say but the CA states otherwise and that's why I said it depends on the cop. do they expect you to know the laws? probably not, but can write you up for it, all the depends on the cops. If they want to be a dick then yeah, they can get you for everything on your car. It doesn't matter :eek:if it's registered in AZ and don't think your the first one to use that as a defense. I understand your argument that the physical nature of the vehicle can not be change prior to crossing the boarder but that is why you do it before you start driving there. If you know you'll be in a state which as has stricter traffic laws then you fix your vehicle. I'm not a rocket scientist but i'm willing to bet that is that is what the cop would say to you if you try using that argument against him but i do understand that it is inconvenient.
For your defense, if i went to AZ i wouldn't know what my car can and can't have. So i'd probably do the same thing your doing. Nice truck though. Working as a sales man I hear people's problems like bartender ;). All i know is that you follow the state laws regardless unless your some guy from a different country or something then it's a little harder for them to get tickets. I saw that from CSI Miami :)
You are right about the registration thing but i don't know if it's 10 or 20 days. It's on the DMV website.

I'm a little late in the thread and short on time...but if it was such an issue to the Officer when he was off duty, he should have called an "on duty" unit at the time of the alleged offense. As far as the alleged equipment violations, regardless what state your vehicle is registered in you are technically supposed to follow the laws in which the current state you are in. I know of many Arizona residents who have been stopped in California for window tint violations, some have recieved citations.

Personally I think it was unprofessional to make contact in that manner and it should have been addressed at the time of the alleged offense.

Definetely unprofessional. Yeah, he probably had a point about the vehicle violations, but WTF on the rest?

I'd write the department and complain. It goes in his file, and if he pulls you over in a week or 2, then it's going to look like he's gunning for you. Which may or may not help depending on the ticket. But at the very least, he needs to be reminded that he can't just randomly harass folks.

haha, looks like you gotta put a set of bushwackers ontop of the glassworks:rofl:

jk, you did the right thing. cops are people too, so treat them like people. i've been in cars when my friends have been pulled over...the very strong pattern i've noticed is that the ones who get really nervous and don't know how to talk get tickets.

i was making a pickup run to get about 8 of my friends who were drinking at a party. had 4 in the cab and 4 in the bed (it's leagal to have people in the bed in FL). the last of the 8 that i picked up was on a street corner at about 2 am. a cop saw me pull into a parking lot near him and help him into the car...but she thought i was kidnapping him . so she pulled me over and told me on her pa to step away from the vehicle. 5 minutes later there were 5 more police cars there lol. bottom line is taht they could have gotten me on some secondary stuff like truck mods, but i stayed calm and jsut talked to them like they weren't an officer. they seemed very friendly and let me go with a "drive safe sir"

sorry, long story... just saying that if you aren't doing anything wrong (you say you aren't) i don't think you have anythign to worry about.

i just got lectured the other night by a cop. was out at a party (i was DD) so it was around 2:30 in the morning when i had dropped off the last drunk. cop pulls me over for who knows what reason. and asked why i swerved over the yellow line? i said i dropped my gps trying to put it on the clip... he asked if i was drinking and yada yada yada... no sir im just the dd for my friends... gave me some long ass speech about drinking and driving.. heard it a million times.... he had me there for 15 mins! the part that got me was he asked me where said party was!!!! WTF!!!!! i just said somewhere near Dayton. i wasnt about to give him all that info... wasnt any of his business and it was way out of his jurisdiction.

i dont mind cops but some are just too damn nosy and think they can intimidate you.

this post REALLY pisses me off. The cops around here drive like complete jackasses just because they can. There is a guy with an unmarked car that lives a few houses down from me that comes through my neighborhood going atleast 45 (its a 25 zone) every evening. They never use their blinkers, they ride your ass and they fly through stop signs.

I don't know if it made the national news, but there was a cop here in central florida who was going 140 miles an hour without his lights on and rear-ended a teenaged kid who was stopped at a red light and killed him instantly just a few months ago. And then- LAST month, in the same county, two cops got suspended for racist e-mails and playing a game of who could "Give out the most citations in one stop" with eachother. If that guy could have given you a ticket, he WOULD HAVE. He was just FLEXING HIS NUTS!

You got an asshole cop. Unfortunately, it happens...99% of cops are at least just regular folks, most are actually decent people. You gotta remember, only domestic disturbance calls are more dangerous for cops, they're on the defensive and looking to establish "who's in charge" from the get go.

I've been pulled over in half the country (I drive a LOT) at one point in time or another. Lemme give you my quick list of how to walk away from 90% of your police encounters.

One, pull OVER, as in far enough off the road that the cop's ass isn't getting tickled by passing sideview mirrors. They fuckin NOTICE this shit.

Shut your car off, and put the keys up on the dash. Have both hands on the wheel in plain site before he walks up to the window. If night or tinted heavily, turn on the dome light so they can SEE you aren't armed. Obviously don't do this if you have a 14 year old midget hooker snorting blow in the back.

When he gets to your window, have it rolled down a couple inches (NOT all the way) and ask what the problem is. Be polite, call him/her "sir/ma'a," or 'officer', and treat him with respect. When they ask you a question, count to 5 in your head BEFORE you open your goddamn trap to answer. Give short yes/no answers dealing specifically with why you are being pulled over. No, you don't know why. No, you don't know how fast you were going. No, he doesn't need to look around.

If he asks you out of the truck, SLOWLY get out. Roll the window up and LOCK the thing, then put the keys in your pocket. If he asks, tell him "I trust two people on the planet with my truck. You ain't me and dad's home bangin' mom, so its locked if I ain't in it."

TAKE YOUR FUCKING TICKET WITH YOUR MOUTH SHUT. Don't name drop (it don't work) don't whine don't cry and don't ANYTHING. If he asks you anything else, "Pardon? I don't consent to a search of my person or vehicle...am I under arrest or am I free to go?"

Thank the officer politley, show up in court and have it dropped when he doesn't show (or can't produce actual evidence). Or just pay the damn ticket and forget about it.

Shut yer goddamn mouth and 99% of 'cop woes' don't exist. DON'T let them search your shit or bully you...be aware of YOUR rights and stand for them firmly but politely. I've done this in a dozen states and only caught some shit for it one single time...which I sorta deserved (I was having a bad day and WAS acting kinda like a dick to him, so I don't take it personal).

^ lol true, although one cop I talked to in Santa Clara was making $160,000 annually after 8 years on the force  That should at least make them less grumpy towards us
