Hello, I have been working on a friends 97' 3RZ Tacoma that the head gasket was blown on it after they let it overheat twice and the head was warped really bad so I went to eBay for a replacement. What I got in the mail I have not seen before. the entire thing looks almost like it was painted with some kind of silver paint and the only surface that is machined smooth is the bottom where it goes against the block.

the split gear on the exhaust cam wasn't set right and the bolt holes don't line up to be able to bolt it in place while removing the cam and the bearing surfaces on the head and the caps look rough and not smooth like I would expect. Should I get the return process start ASAP or is this normal? If anyone want's more pictures just let me know. image3[97].jpg image0[86].jpg image1[95].jpg image0[94].jpg

Wow is right, not good. If the cam bearing areas... hell I cannot even comment on this. I would return the head.

aprauto out of Colorado Springs. My friend is paying for parts but he is older and on a fixed income which is why i'm trying to help him in the first place. the dealership was wanting an arm and a leg to do it. I have no idea where to get a reliable remanufactured head. I typically try to go through rockauto as I have never had an issue like this with them but they were out of stock.

    Return that. Looks bad.

Do you have a local head shop? If so take the OEM one there and see what they think.

I was contemplating one from https://cylinderhead.com/ , but it ended up cheaper to just have the local shop rework it. Mine wasn't warped though.

Yeah I already took the original head to the local machine shops and none of them would try to straighten it and they said there is no one around here that still do that kind of work which is unfortunate because other than the warp the head is still within spec.

In what general area are you located?

The best machine shops I have dealt with lately are all Diesel shops. If you go in and bullshit with them I have had good luck having them machine toyota parts. All the up and coming machinests in the auto field seem to have gravitated to the diesel side.

Send that FUGLY thing back. Like, start putting it in a box now. Even the valve seats look wierd. There is too much work involved w/ replacing the head twice. You can get one from Napa for 800 bucks.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
I gotta wonder is this the normal for the finished product?

A few operations got missed but send it out the inspector is out today

Are these heads prone to cracking and warping that used heads are hard to find and be rebuilt ??

Milling a head to straighten gets very labor intensive because everything else needs to be milled as well .

Then you have a limit to just how much you can remove in any case.

Can't you just have a machine shop mill your OEM cyl head to get the deck surface smooth and flat ?? , you could go 0.030 cut

Great advice. If you still have it and it ain’t cracked, a local machine shop can completely rework the original for around 700-750. I recently went this route w/ a used head I bought in VT
