Just curious - why do they use the term "trim" for different variations?

I've had Tacomas for 35 straight years but this is the first time I bought new. So I was puzzled why they talked about trim - "Well, sir, that feature availability depends on the trim"

I never used trim except for the trim around the sleeve on a woman's garment, that kind of meaning.

I know they can't call them models, Tacoma is a Toyota model. They didn't like variant or variation or some synonym?

How's that for a trivial question?

    :)

Ha, it's nice to see a something different than "wut size tar kin ah put on?".

I would think the trim term came from "trim" being added to the truck build (like your example)

Good question. Who knows the accuracy, but cgpt says

    • Historical Context:
The term "trim" originated when cars were hand-built, and different trims or finishes were applied to the interior and exterior to create unique looks.

In construction, "trimming a house" refers to the final stage of finishing, after the main stuctural and mechaical work is complete... the finishing touches.

The previous phrase was 'trim package'.

Being the lazy creatures we are, 'package' is now ignored.

We also used to be able to order vehicles one option at a time, just for us. Now we 'get lucky' with what the OE says we want. And those options are 'bundled'.

Guess they got tired of having to wash the vehicles. You can't really expect people to lick every vehicle to figure out which flavor they want.
