Just bought 2004 Tacoma PreRunner Regular Cab

    I just bought this 2004 Tacoma PreRunner Regular Cab with SR5 package earlier this week! This is my second Tacoma, but my first first gen. I love this truck so much, I looked for years to find it to be honest, and traveled almost 375 miles away to get this!

    Yesterday, I went to the Toyota dealership and bought the following parts to service the car:
    1. Upper and lower radiator hoses
    2. 3 new belts
    3. Thermostat and gasket
    4. Fuel filter
    5. Spark plugs
    6. Toyota Red coolant
    7. Rear Diff oil
    8. Engine air filter
    9. Wiper blades
    10. Fuel cap

    Excited to make sure all of its maintenance is up to date and with factory parts. I love how you can get almost any part for first gens at the Toyota dealership still!

    Please let me know if I’m forgetting about anything!

    Very nice,
    1) rear differential breather valve, make sure it 100 percent working, if not you will loss a rear axle seal
    =1000.00 for repairs
    2) transmission oil change
    3) radiator flush
    4) brake fluid flush if the oil is dark

    Thank you for these recommendations! I'll definitely swap the trans fluid (this truck is a 2.7 auto) and check that breather valve on the rear diff. Already planning to flush the radiator, replace the original upper and lower radiator hoses, replace the thermostat and gasket, and then refill the system with Toyota Red

    Probably should change out the lower ball joints as well if they haven't been changed at all. Before you do though, plug your vin into toyotaowners.com and see if you're eligible for the recall to have them changed for free. It'll be noted as ssc 50j

    Do the 2 wheel drive have the same bad design lower ball joints?

    If so DEFINITELY replace then with OEM ones

    Yup, my old prerunner was the same as my 4wd, it's the 5 lugs that are different. Definitely agree with OEM, you'll easily get another 100k out of them with normal road driving

    However that did happen at like...320,000 or something. I was unaware of the potential failure issues prior to that happening.

    Thanks so much for raising my awareness about this issue! I just registered my truck at Toyota's website. The lower ball joint recall was performed in 2006 by toyota (about 75,000 miles ago). Would you recommend changing them again at this point?

    Your probably ok, but

    I change mine every 100,000 because I’m NEVER going to be that guy with my wheel rolling down the road Or my truck flipped over at 65 mph
