I wanted opinions /reviews for this woofer. I am ready to install a subwoofer and have contacted Mr. Marv regarding him building a custom box to my 19 double cab. I have Rockford Fosgate 1000bd which is 1000x1 at 2 ohms or 500x1 at 4 ohms I will use to push it.

I am debating using this woofer or two smaller woofers like Kicker L7T 8 inch which come in loaded boxes already.

I want something that will sound great when driving on the highway at 75 with the windows down instead of now where all my bass goes away from my Kicker 6x9 6.5 and tweeters. I have an Alpine head unit also.

Thanks for chiming in all opinions welcome!

The JL would be my pick if you’re willing to spend the cash and have the box built.

it will hit much deeper than the 8’s would, and still provide great “punch” for rock music

I'm running a jl audio 10tw3-d4, its sounds amazing in the custom box I have behind the rear drivers side seat(replaced small cubby). Its powered by a alpine s-a60m and hits plenty hard enough to ease my need for bass. I chose it bc it doesn't need much volume in the box to get decent bass out of it.

I have a JL 12tw3 in a Marv enclosure and love it, coming from a 10w1v3 in a marv enclosure, the 12 sounds so much better. Marv is top quality, just have to be patient as he gets pretty busy.

truth. for our application it's great. this is a 13TW5 in a Marv box. 500/1 & Alumapro 5F. pretty tight fit.

Thanks for the replys... I have no experience with JL but all the reviews are positive...they say you get what you pay for basically. I don't mind paying some money, I just want to be satisfied when done kinda like going out to eat and you leave still hungry. I listen to music loud...don't care if the guy 3 cars up hears me I just want to hear it.

What if any modifications did you do to make it fit or not rub the back of seat on full excursion?

regarding this part i have one thing to say. if you want to run it hard enough for that kind of volume, you're gonna need to sign up for significant sound deadening work on your truck or you'll be resonating like crazy. think roof & floor...

Marv knows all about this in detail so your in good hands. your part will include removing all rear plastic parts, and your dynamat can only be within the contours in the body panels but not on top as it will put the box too far forward. yes it's that tight. and you'll need to run them with the seats up. they make light contact to the ring when down. otherwise it's zero problem.

my last application was a pair of 10W7's in a sealed box and it was damn good in a SQ install. i still have those subs and would use them again if they fit. the 13TW5 is no comparison, but i decided it may not provide the SQ & depth of the W7's, but it will punch hard all day long and that's something to me. so, I'm satisfied although i need to pull it apart to redo my roof & floor.

Seats will be up and I have no problem removing the plastic shelving in back and adding some sound insulation....did you have to remove the plastic on back of the seat as well?

I’ve been playing 1 JL 13TW5V2 @630w for about 5 years. I still like it and will probably get a 2nd when I finally move into the 4Runner..although still would have preferred having a traditional W6 or W7 sub at that price point. Here is some of my thoughts and I’ll try to be objective:

    1. Waka Flocka Flame -No Hands - about 95% of the bass plays exceptionally strong except for the lowest tones, which need regular sub and ported box to play any way. This is a good real-world track to test with. I’d say this is the limit of what to push at high volume. Some Drake or Cardi B tracks (which have way overboosted bass tones) need a real sub with more Z in order to safely play at loud volume. Bass music also needs to be played carefully.

    2. The 13TW5V2 doesn’t have as much of a Z max as the TW3. The TW3 will have more punch and play more powerfully. You will get more bass from two TW3’s playing, than 1 13TW5V2, playing from a 600-700 watt amp.

    3. It’s a very accurate and musical sounding sub, mainly due to the sealed box recommendation. It probably could play in a ported box, but it’s up the listener to experiment with parameters and risk damaging the suspension.

    4. Cone repair was $220 (which I did since my amp threw constant DC without me knowing) a few years ago, but has increased to $350. There are no DIY cone kits yet. Don’t blow this sub and make sure you know what DC offset ‘sounds’ like so you can kill the radio if it happens.

    5. Like most other JL speakers, the V2 design hasn’t changed since 2013 or 2014. It doesn’t need to change because it continues to sound good for a thin sub. JL just increases the prices rather than making a new speaker at the same price point with cheaper materials or process, which is what a lot of others do. All it needs now is more Z, which will make it thicker though.

    6. Put the speaker behind the rear left, instead of the rear right seat. You will get slightly more bass response into your lower back. The plastic seat cover needs removed.

The last time I did sound deadening I used a spray like a rubber sound deadening spray. Cant remember the brand but it worked wonders in the trunk of my car. I may give this a try as well.
