    They also don't realize how much of California is barren desert because they only think of LA, San Francisco, and San Diego.

    People know what they see. They fly into Newark, head northeast to NYC, and then head back to Newark to fly home. To them, yes, the state is a huge oil refinery. Can't fault them for observing what's around them.
