have a 2015 tacoma ,( automatic )with 58k miles on it.....and have been noticing that when the truck gets around 40-45 mph and if speed is decreased in that range, then when trying to accelerate, its like the truck cant figure out what gear to pick and gets jerky. I have watched the tachometer and seems there is a shift / gear right in those 2 speeds. if I get pasted that 45 mph, then the truck is fine.

what could be causing this ?

    another question ..

is there anything that can be done without costing a small fortune, to change the low gearing this truck has ?

You are right between shift points in that range. The ecu has to pick a gear and when it is on the edge that is what happens.

I’m fairly certain that’s just one of the things you have to deal with on an auto transmission. You might be able to make it less noticeable from driving it a little bit differently than you are now, but I wouldn’t be able to say for sure.

I believe my dad’s auto is a little iffy on what gear to use in that range but I certainly wouldn’t call it jerky.

how would I go about driving the truck differently ?

in all the automatic vehicles I have had, I havent had this happen before.....

jerky is the word that best describes what the truck does.......should I use another word instead ?

Maybe disconnect your battery for a few minutes, then reconnect. That should reset the ECU and you can reteach the truck

I completely forgot about doing that. Yeah OP do this first and see if it fixes it.

As far as the driving thing, it’s hard to say anything really without personally seeing how you’re driving. Not anything against you, just that some people have a tendency to alternate between keeping their speed to full on with the gas all the time.

I would drive how you drive. It should learn appropriate response from that.

Assuming you bought it used it would’ve learned how some one else drives and like my other post said about driving habits, they could’ve been some one really jerky with their driving.

I just maintain the speed I am at......not like those that you get behind that speed up / slow down/ speed up.....

so , once the battery is disconnected / reconnected....when I go drive the truck, drive it like I want to or just normal ?

That is only one shift point and you are on the edge between the two gears.

Mine does this at 35-40mph .I just go a little faster or slower, or shift the gear selector to 4 to prevent it from flipping between 4 and 5.
