If I engage 4x4 high, and turn the truck off in gear (1st), then jack both rear wheels off the ground using the rear differential, will the truck be able to roll? I know if I jacked the front up in 2wd the transmission and parking brake would keep the rear wheels from rolling, but what I’m wondering is if 4x4 can prevent the front wheels from rolling.

Edit: just so you know, I would of course chock the front wheels, but what I’m wondering is if the 4x4 can act as a secondary safety measure.

It will roll back and forth a little bit (few inches). Best bet is to throw a block of wood or something against the tire also.

If in a pinch lock ebrake auto and manual.
You can change tires but do much else. You will not roll. Still though block your tires.

I do that all the time when Im lifting my truck, moves just a little but not much. Makes taking the front rims off a lot easier too if your working up there. As others have mentioned, this with the parking brake and wheel chocks is best

    Dear Pontoon,

Remember once you engage four wheel drive, the front wheels do the same thing as the back wheels. If you jack up your rear end with your truck engaged in four wheel drive and your transmission in first gear with your foot off the clutch, the truck will remain stationary. The transmission will prevent the front wheels from going forward or reverse.

    Good Luck,
    Paul

    1,000 times this. ^^^

Always chock the wheels, even if you're only jacking up the front end, and using the E-brake.

After you jack it up, be sure to give it the ol jiggle test before you start working on it, too.
