It sounds like a horse trotting underneath my truck

I have a 07 Tacoma SR5 double cab V6 4 wheel drive. It's a 5-speed automatic transmission. There's the strangest sound exactly like a horse trotting down a paved road, clackity clackity clack clackety clack. It seems to be coming out of the transmission area and to me sounds loudest when cold.
The truck runs great and nothing unusual when shifting. I have about 115,000 on it, and No I did not run over a parade! :)
Any ideas what it might be?

Gonna ask the obvious but have you got under it and checked for something loose?

Does the sound speed up and slow down with the speed you are going?

does it make the noise still?
remove front drive shaft and put rear back in and does it make same noise?

Also, i know this sounds stupid but it happened to me after driving through Home Depot parking lot. Check your tires for nails, screws, etc. A big screw in two tires will make that sound. I had a screw in LF and RR and sounded like a horse running beside me all the way to the tire shop. And i hope the dick head that spilled them and didnt pick them up ran out of screws for his project before finishing.

The sound is there at idle. So that rules out some of your ideas (but I like the pulling her hair idea though).
I don't remember if the sound sped up with acceleration. I will check it when it cools down because i just drove it and i can confirm the sound is not present after the drive.

Sounds like a nail or screw in a tire.

I'm quite familiar with that since I had 3 screws in the same tire on my Pontiac in 3 years from damn construction around the city.
