Shop around. Most auto insurance companies also sell mechanical breakdown insurance. Anyway back to your first question, IMHO no. If they would sell me the same policy after I hit 125-150K miles then that would be a deal.

You're going to get very large range of opinions, all the way from "hell no! You're stupid for even considering" to "hell yeah, you're an idiot for even considering NOT getting one!"
Each and every person is in a different spot, and as far as I know, none of us are able to predict the future, so each person should weigh the risks and rewards to see if it's worth it.

Three major factors to consider though:

    1. Do you intend to stay stock? Moderate to heavy modding often causes issues, especially when out of town at visiting dealer

    2. How well do you know and trust your dealer? An extended warranty is only as good as the dealer helping you use it. If you have no intention of using your dealer, my guess is you don't know or trust them, so this is very important. Right or wrong, many dealers take care of customers that take care of them, happens everywhere biz.

    3. of course initial warranty costs.

Probably not worth it even if you paid a Toyota dealer to do you're routine maintenance.
The words EXTRA, and PLATINUM are reason enough not to buy the additional coverage.

People have said in here that they got 8 year 125K miles for $1000 which I thought was good .

All extended warranties aren’t a very good deal.. from cars to electronics. The people who sell them make a ton of money on them. Think about that. They wouldn’t be pushing them so hard if not.

The trucks come with a decent warranty on their own and the likelihood of you using the full amount you spend on the warranty in repairs is pretty slim. One thing you could do is take the amount you’re planning to spend on a warranty and just put it in a separate account for repairs you’d use the warranty. Maybe throw $25 bucks a week in there for a year. That way you’re self insuring but it’s your own money.

Just my .02 I do admit that those warranties work out for some people but there is a small amount who make out on the deal

I bought mine certified used and got the extended warranty to 100k for around 1200 if I remember right. Have always felt like it was kind of a waste of money but have recently been having stereo issues. That warranty has been nice. That said, could have probably bought a waaaay better aftermarket head unit cheaper than the warranty. Peice of mind is hard to put a price on though.

So I am unsure of where I stand. The electronics for me is just a bonus. But my vehicle is not certified pre-owned, and I’m not sure what is already covered just by the fact I own a Toyota itself.

    1. Moderate modding
    2. Trust my dealer quite a bit - I always spot check their work and have been happy with my representative that usually handles my cases for the past 2 years (I had a 2nd gen)

I don't have an extended warranty on my truck, but had one on my old xterra. We paid $1200 for it when we got it and it paid for itself when we needed a new transmission. I usually don't by extended warranties, but glad I did in that occassion. It's really up to you as to what to do. If having it will give you peace of mind then get it. Good luck with your decision.

I would say yes, if it fits into your budget and you’re not going to do anything that could possibly void your warranties.

The VSA offered by Toyota is a fantastic exclusionary warranty. Toyota’s are great vehicles that we all know are known for their reliability, but can the same be said who all of those computers and electronic components?

I didn’t buy the VSA because I would’ve voided it anyway. I did buy an Ethos warranty for my used BMW a few years ago. It cost me $3000.00 for 3yr/30k but within those three years it covered just over $5000.00 worth of repairs.

Sure, you shouldn’t compare a new Toyota with a used BMW but that experience made me greatly appreciate good warranty options.

I picked up the extended Toyota care when I bought my 2018 OR. I previously had a Corolla and had he standard Toyota care with that as well and loved it. With my busy lifestyle I do not have the time to put my vehicle on stands and do the work myself so the Toyota care was great for me. With the Corolla I saved around $2500 with the 3 years of the "free" Toyota care for new cars.

With my OR I figured to get the care package of the extended warranty and the chip protect for the extra $1200. After doing the math, I will have worry free maintenance for another 4 years and my dealership is great as well so if nothing major happens then I'll skate by with about $2100 saved in maintenance and all I had to do was drop the rig off a couple times a year. I also factored in the fact that the 2018 had additional electronics to it so all of the sensors and what not being covered provided some great piece of mind.

I am also putting away some serious cash for when the warranties expire that way I can jump right into modding and have a virtually "bug free" and maintained rig when that time comes.

To me it’s a peace of mind. I’ve read countless stories where your initial claim is denied and you usually have to keep pushing and not taking no for answer. Eventually MOST people have had repairs done under warranty. A buddy of mind with a fairly heavily modded 16 taco had his engine blow at 38k, and yes while it was under the original factory warranty they were saying no. Took him 5 weeks for them to finally warranty it and he didn’t get stuck with the 8k+ bill.

My Tacoma is lightly and don’t plan on doing much more to it. I bought a 6 year/100k for $1095, and that’s a gamble I don’t mind losing. It’s $200 roughly a year when you look at it so it isn’t awful and it’s a peace of mind. I got the platinum so I have road side assistance as well. My dealer installs lifts and what not so I’m pretty confident if anything we’re to ever arise (I would rather not) that they wouldn’t be too hesitant to warranty something. And by the way, shop around. I actually bought the warranty at a dealer across the state because my hometown dealer wanted $2250.

This definitely gives me a lot to think about. Talked to the finance guy today and the cost of replacing the nag or computer alone is worth it.

And to my knowledge mods don’t void the warranty as long as it doesn’t affect what went wrong.

I also got the truck for a great price so that factors into my cost/benefit analysis. I can hear my dad screaming from the grave tho :-/

They “dont”. Many people want to pull the magnuson moss warranty act, but what they don’t realize is the dealer can say no all day long. If you lift your truck and mod it, they can say no and while they have there has to be proof that the mod didn’t/did affect what failed, it’ll be on your dime. Some dealers are cooler than others and will have the decency to be honest and know if your mods really did affect the failure and what not. It all depends on your dealer or where you go. Just keep that in mind as well. To me, I know I’ll probably get hassled a lot if and when something does fail, but it’s better to have it and have an uphill battle than to wish I had it and have no other option than to fork out the cash. Besides, I’d be happy to not have any major issues with my truck for the 100k and have paid the dealer $1095 any day. It’s a lot of money, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t affect my living situation and gives me a peace of mind.
