Is this deep enough water to warrant a prompt diff fluid change?

I normally avoid driving over water, but I was kinda forced upon this morning on the exit ramp

judging from the truck in front of me, I think at least part of my rear diff was submerged in water for that few seconds.

Should the fluid be changed due to possible water intrusion?

Might actually just need a whole new truck. Maybe park it for a month. Put the truck in a container of rice. o_O

    You're fine man!

    A bunch..and no build thread!
It's toast..I would call your insurance agent.

But seriously folks, no..Not just no but hell no.

You would have to swamp the diff, submerge it and the breather (one way breather at that) would have to fail, all at the same time. You have a 2022..you're fine.

From what I see, it looks like the water isn't as high as you think. Maybe up to the edge of the wheel.

Regularly drive through deep water and never had an issue with the fluid.

    thanks for reassuring

my 2020 Miata owner's manual exact wording on rear diff fluid is "If this component has been submerged in water, the oil should be replaced."

    on Tacoma
    Screen Shot 2022-04-25 at 12.03.13 PM.jpg

    it calls for inspection.
Has anyone ever got water damage to the diff at all? Or this is purely just corporate CYA recommendation?

I've never seen it. I have an ARB breather on my truck (relocates the breather to behind the drivers side tail light), but even before I added it, I had gone through foot deep crossings without issue.

As a previous poster mentioned, that puddle looked to be about 4" deep.

If you’re paranoid pull the fill plug, dip your finger in and if it isn’t clear gear oil give her a change. It will be noticeably milky if it’s got water

    No way man.

I had water pretty much up to the bottom of my doors and no water in the rear diff. Stock breather too.

You can see how deep the water is, look at that 4R in front of me.

Have you ever been through a car wash that sprays your under carriage? Because that would probably get it more wet than this puddle.

I just got back from checking the flooding at my cabin and drove through four miles straight of water as high or higher than that.

If you have problems... my truck is a write-off.

You're all good. It's a Tacoma not an old cell phone.

Change it regardless. Do it as a break-in change. Do it yourself and enjoy the process. Almost as easy as pumping your own gas. Under $50.

I would not worry about it at all.

I worry more about fluid leaking out. Than water getting in.

Those of us that know, know.
    Those that don’t will.

Unless you are proactive and check/change the breather regularly.
(Guess who didn’t, guess what happened?)
