This is the only key the dealership gave me when I bought my SX5 two weeks ago. I've been told I can't get a copy made. But it's not a transponder, just a regular old key right? So why?Nervous about losing it especially since I traded in my Prius and never had to take the key out of my pocket so key security never entered my mind.

I think all the 3rd gen tacomas have a security key of some kind so that's probably a chip key. if its an SR trim they would have the chip key without the lock/unlock buttons.

Take the truck to a locksmith and most of them can make you a key and program it. usually it's not cheap to do but less than the dealership also if you get additional keys for the truck at the same visit each additional keys is less

Did you take a picture of the other side? There might be a H on the top of the keyblade near the plastic. If it does, then it's a transponder key!

There is a chip in it so the trucK knows it's your key. Copies are pricey. You should have two from the stealership

Who said you can’t get a copy made?

Typically, it requires that you show proof of ownership to have a transponder key made.

Title or registration. Plus a photo ID.

Exactly any good locksmith that has the proper equipment can do it and they will ask for this proof/

Thanks to all. There is indeed a little H on the blade. I guess I will take it to a locksmith. The dealership said Toyota would be sending another (or others) but no one knows when. They said the chip shortage is getting worse and Toyota's key supplier "burned to the ground". Chip shortage I can believe but, come on, a fire?

That's a transponder key but obviously not a Remote Keyless Entry key. My TRD Sport came with two RKE keys. I bought two extra plain transponder keys from the dealer. They cost $35 each, just for the keys and the physical cutting, but then there was an additional charge of $155 to program them (both) to the truck. RKE keys are considerably more. (Dealers usually charge the same for programming, whether you are getting one key or several.)

I've found that locksmith programming is hit and miss, and of course you don't get genuine Toyota keys. If you want a roll of the dice with aftermarket keys, go ahead.

A lot of people seem to be getting just one key with their new truck (plus the promise of getting the second one later). This is supposedly due to a shortage of chips, and is a Toyota national policy. If you really need a second key right now, you have the option of buying one from the dealer and paying roughly $200 including the programming. (If you go that route, get more than one because the programming charge is the same regardless of the number of keys. The programming charge is much more than the cost of the key itself.)

Go back and have them give you/make you another key free of charge,NO dealership should ever sell a car with 1 key.
Toyota tried the same crap with my wifes Corolla, and I had them make her 2 more keys on their dime.

This is the same key I have but its to lock and unlock my tailgate only. I thought the transponder was the square keyless ones.

Only the trd's have the fob. All others still have an actual key

Pretty sure you can program the physical G & H chipped transponder keys with Techstream. Just got done programming x3 of them for a friend of mine and x2 for myself, but this was for a 2nd gen Taco. Keys were about $20/ea and looked identical to OP's keys. Took me all of about 10 mins total to do it with my laptop and ECU cable.

I'm not sure about the wireless keys but wouldn't be surprised if Techstream was able to pair them to your truck.

copies are 20 dollars for a blank. 5-10 dollars to cut at lowes/homedepot and a beer for a buddy that has tech stream that can program it for you

Ive programmed 2 keys for myself.

these worked great for my 2019

The Toyota dealer charged me $58.72 for two transponder keys, including the physical cutting (works out to $29.36 each). The programming was the expensive part -- $154.95 for the two keys. (That would be a flat charge regardless of the number of keys.)

If you can do the programming yourself, then it would make sense to get the keys at the dealer, and have them cut there, rather than mess around with Home Depot.

if a dealership is close, go for it. My home depot is 10 min away vs a dealer which is 40 min away.

32 dollars for keys + 5-10 dollars to get them cut = at most 42 dollars for 2 keys. How is the dealer cheaper?
