Is there any reason why a 2012-2015 dash kit doesn’t fit a 2005-2011?

I’m looking at this oversized Metra dash kit http://www.metraonline.com/part/108-TO2B to install a Pioneer DMH-C5500NEX 8-inch head unit. But it says it’s only for 2012-2015 Tacomas.

Aren’t the early and late model 2 gens dimensionally the same on the center stack except for some minor cosmetic differences like with the hazard/clock unit which I can just replace easily?

    Theoretically, wouldn’t a normal double DIN dash kit from a 2012-2015 fit a 2005-2011?

In a recent thread, people indicated that a "refresh" took place in 2012. I recall the radio being part of that discussion.

    Why not ask Metra?

They're different. If you look at the threads where people put the later stereo in the earlier truck, you'll see that they had to do some grinding on the plastic and it doesn't fit perfect.

I see. I guess I will have to scrap the idea of going with the Pioneer C5500NEX.

I'm sure there's a kit that would fit your truck. Have you checked on Crutchfield?

    Yes I did.

There are many dash kits for the regular size double din head units with the typical 6.5 to 7" screens for 2005-2011 Tacomas.

But the Pioneer C5500NEX is not a regular size heat unit. It has a 8" screen with doesn't fit the regular double din dash kits out there. Only Metra makes the dash kit to go with the C5500NEX but unfortunately they only list for 2012-2015 Tacomas.

Aux back up lights, Bed lights, Re-located trailer plug, Good dooby, a.k.a. jumper cable mod, Heated seats, back up camera,
Buy the kit. See if you want to do the required trimming before writing it off.
A belt sander would work nicely in taking the plastic down.

Can't believe how hard it is to find people who have done this.
Wanting the biggest flush mount screen, but scared to try an android unit.
Guessing because its the worst time on earth to upgrade.

Did you ever try this to see if it would work? It looks like the radio trim itself would fit. Maybe the radio bracket is different.

I have installed a factory Nav radio from a 2014 truck in my 05. It can be done with just a little trimming of plastic. its the plastic that is behind the unit so its not visible. I dont know for sure about the application your are attempting but I imagine you can do it with just some minor trimming. If you search around there are threads showing pics of how to install the 12-15 units in the older dash.

This thread breaks down installing the new radio in the older dash and what it took. maybe it will help you with what you are trying to do.
