Is there a trick to securing these fender liner to bumper clips?

I can't believe I'm having so much trouble figuring this out. I'm putting the fender liners back on after fiddling with the front end for a few months, and I can't seem to get these damn push pins to go in. The clips I am talking about are the 2 piece clips that put the fender liner onto the front bumper sides. It's a little v-shaped clip with a push pin. It seems extremely self-explanatory, but after I put the fender liner on the clip it refuses to go on to the bumper. I've literally been messing with it for hours but the push pin will not go through the two pieces. I'm assuming I'm doing something wrong and it is an extremely simple process, so does anyone know what the trick is? I tried it both ways, on the bumper first, and on the liner first but no matter what the holes will not line up. I also realize it isn't very important and I can just leave it off, but that would bother my little brain too much.

Sounds to me like he's talking about the black clips with the round center that pull out separate from the clip to remove the clip, not the ones on the flares.

@drewskie For those black clips, they won't go in nicely with the "pin" pushed into the clip. You have to insert them with the pin pulled up, then once they are in you push the pin down. Also, some of the holes these go in may not be round and you might have to rotate the whole clip a bit to find the "key" for them to push in the hole and then press down the pin.

That's exactly what I'm talking about, and it looks like you've dealt with these before. I think I was able to get the driver's side in, but the passenger side is being a complete bitch. I've been trying to install it without the pin at all, and then inserting it later but I'll try the pin first and see if I can get it to line up and then push it in. There's no way it was made this difficult on purpose so maybe I'm just a dummy.

Installing without the pin is a good idea, rather than trying to keep the pin pulled out while you press the rest in.
