Is there a fuel filter on 2012 Tacoma? Where?

    Hello all,

Yes I am new here, but not new to the underside of a truck.

I looked and I cannot find an inline fuel filter on my 2012, double cab 4.0L Tacoma. I live in North Pole, Alaska and our gas isn't great. At 65K I want to change it.

A quick search says that MAYBE there's only an in-tank filter.

    Can anyone help:
a-- Is there an inline filter, or an in-tank filter, or both?
    b-- Where do I find it/them?

Thanks for obliging. (Probably should just get the Haynes manual like for my 1989 Bronco)
PS I searched this forum and nothing came up, so I am asking.

    John in North Pole

Thanks! I'll have to poke around more when I am done grading papers here.

and CRAP! I had hoped there was an easy filter to change. Our gas is crap and sometimes my Taco struggles to start. All my prior trucks just got a new fuel filter every 5 years or so.

    Thanks guys!

    Now rant time:

Who's stupid idea was that to have ONLY an in-tank filter on a truck? Like there won't be any dirt in the tank? Like rural out-of -the-way gas stations will have clean gas?Really guys?
*sigh* And here I thought Toyota was smart.

jup, I think u may have to buy the complete fuel pump cause they may not just sell the filter element separately, im not 100% sure about that tho but since your removing so many parts to get to the filter might as well replace everything while your in there

    Thanks Bill,
I'll have to save up a weekend to drop the tank. That'll be a pain in the axe.

Can I take the plastic bed liner off and get to it from the top without dropping the tank?

I'd rather just do that instead.

I replaced the fuel pump on my 1st gen by removing 6 -17mm bolts underneath and slide the bed out of the way, very simple but these 2nd gens have those shitty Torx screws in the bed and they rust to hell and might get stripped easily and frustrate the hell out of u, I would think dropping the tank might? be a better option, I would search the 2nd gen forum on fuel filter/pump replacement to find the easiest option. http://www.customtacos.com/tech.old.../06toyrm/06toypdf/06rmsrc/rm2006ta/009002.pdf http://www.customtacos.com/tech.old.../06toyrm/06toypdf/06rmsrc/rm2006ta/009003.pdf

    Thanks Bill!
Lookin at mine there's no rust on them here. (It's sooo dry stuff generally rusts very slowly.)
I may try the bed sliding option here soon.

    Thanks!

In regards to the Haynes manual comment Toyota (and probably many other manufacturers) has migrated to an online subscription based system. There are price options depending on how long you need access to the “manual”. Last time I checked I think the fee was $15 for a one or two day subscription. I was bummed no printed FSM or Haynes manual exists for my Taco.

This is my plan sometime next summer with the DW 255 pump and call it good. I plan on keeping my taco for a while and may as well do some preventative maintenance when i get closer to the 100k mark on stuff like this.

Along with a proper pickup tube that doesnt get kinked like the URD submersible hose.

6inch lift sitting on bilstein coilovers. Lexus is300 studs in front to keep stock wheels, general grabber red letters, nfab front bumper.
With plastic tanks, plastic lines, and plastic injectors, external filters have become a thing of the past. Sometimes you can find rebuild kits for fuel pumps that would give a new pump sock for relatively cheap, the problem is the labor. Have a couple buddies come over and help lift the bed off the truck. Way easier than dropping the tank. As for fuel. Some gas stations or powersport dealers offer ethanol free gasoline.

It makes fuel system maintenance much easier as it's fifteen minutes at most to replace the external filter. Compatible fuel filters come from NAPA or K&N, so all it takes is a trip to your local auto parts store to get a new fuel filter in your hands.

    It is in the tank.

It doesn’t matter where you live, all gas in the US must meet EPA standards.

There is absolutely not reason to consider changing a fuel filter at 65k.
