Is the tonneau cover secure and waterproof like a car trunk?

So I’ve had my truck for just about a year and a half now. I miss having trunk space and a place I can safely put things away like my luggage, work computer, etc. I’m having to lock up my laptop behind my folding seat and put in my laptop bag on the floor covering with a towel. I also find myself loading up my truck with people and putting bags and other stuff on top of them just so we can get somewhere. I miss having a trunk. I’ve had people tell me, just put a net in the back your truck into his stuff back there. That’s not what I want. I want to secure or safe place to put things out of sight.

I am wondering if a tonneau cover is lockable, waterproof and basically like a trunk. I was thinking i could get a factory hard foldable cover.

For those who have this, is it usable like a trunk (given that I’d have to put a basket or something to keep things from sliding all around).

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Searching this site will provide a lot of information. I have a G4 Elite Fold A Cover, it's not 100% waterproof, but does really well at keeping water out. I bought an OEM bed mat so items won't slide around, a cargo net for the front of the bed and two large storage bins I keep towards the tailgate. I put items I don't want any chance of getting wet (or dusty) inside the storage bins. This has worked very well for me. I think all hard covers lock.

Lockable yes, waterproof not likely. At least none of the tri fold ones or vynil roll ups.

The fiberglass one piece is expensive but it’s waterproof, looks better, locks and is a better deterrent to theft.

There is much to seal up besides just putting the cover on. Dust gets under mine still

Thanks for the replies. This helps. Sometimes I take my Honda Accord on road trips because I can’t put my luggage in a secure place. I miss having a secure, lockable trunk. In a few years my kids will start driving and I will only have one car or truck to myself. I’m thinking one of my kids will get my old hand me down Honda and I will either keep my truck after my lease is up in a year and a half, or get something else for ME. I’m kind of liking the idea of a 4Runner. Maybe I’ll pickup a used 2018 4Runner Pro. I like the idea of the truck, but I find myself often wanting a trunk area back. Also, I’d like to get more comfortable leather seats as well.

This is why SUVs were invented. Some people wanted a closed up pickup truck.

Diamondback Covers, in my opinion, are the everything-proof bed covers. They are made of aluminum diamond plate and have a deadbolt locking system. All the reviews I read rate them at basically 99% water proof. The other 1% is if you would apply direct pressure at the tailgate seams. They also have options for buying some that are rated to hold 400lbs or 1600lbs which would make it function as a flatbed. I'm currently saving up to buy one because they are a bit expensive. They are basically more secure than your truck cabin since people can break the glass to steal stuff but if you lock your tailgate your bed is completely sealed/locked.

That diamond back cover is insanely awesome and cool. I think that’s a bit more than I was needing. But it certainly is super awesome. Do you know about how much those run?

The cheapest they offer is the one rated for 400lbs at $1350 with the stainless steel finish. The same cover but with a Line-X finish goes for $1650. The one rated 1600lbs goes for $1750 stainless finish or $2050 Line-X. Definitely in the high end but nobody who’s bought one, that I know of, has regretted it.

My kid plays alot of bsbl and we travel around the state almost every weekend during the season.

I went Diamondback because it keeps our luggage, coolers, chairs, wagons, canopy's, heaters, m(bow during hunting season) dry. His bats, gloves and catchers gear is expensive and the Diamondback cover is really secure.

My new 2019 came with a tonneau cover (folding). I was really excited about it to be able to put things in the bed, locked & dry. Well I've only had the truck a week & I had my shopping bags in the bed and they are damp. So I am guessing the tonneau cover I have does not keep the water out. Super bummed about that. Will be looking into something better soon.

I have the Bac Flip F1 Tonneau cover. It is a very nice cover but it leaks. Not a lot but it leaks wen it rains heavy up here and we do get a lot of rain here in the North West. For what I need though it works well. I toyed with the idea of a cap but decided on the Tonneau cover route. No regrets.

    Take Care

I had a topdeck cover which was essentially %100 waterproof but sometimes a couple drops made it into the back of the bed. It completely covers the three other sides though and comes down about an inch so no water getting in that way

I know a few people have applied additional weather-stripping where the (especially soft) tonneau covers meet the bed top, and they all seem to say that the weather-proofing/dust-proofing improves to nearly perfect.

    Like, so many.
I have a Rugged Cover 2. I can’t think of a time I’ve had anything in the bed get wet. I have no hesitation putting luggage in the back on road trips. It’s also easy to take off when I need the full bed and it’s not too heavy.

Mine leaked too, I bought the Diamondback, zero regrets. No water gets in, it's secure, and it looks great.
