Is the pcv valve supposed to be super loud?

I noticed a loud “ratcheting” grinding noise coming from my engine on drivers side. Chased the noise down to the pcv valve with a stethoscope. It’s so loud you can hear it rattling away at idle . About 3x as loud as the typical injector tick and d4s system. Truck only has 4k miles.

Might wanna take to the dealer and get that checked out. So far as I know, the PCV shouldn't be making any noise.

If I not mistaken, if PCV issues, suppose to be rough idle problems. I would do what previous post wrote, go to dealer and have your Tacoma checked out.;)

Been an ongoing battle with Toyota to get them to acknowledge something is wrong. They keep saying the rough idle is normal and that the noise they don’t know what it is. Useless as can be. Took it upon myself to start figuring things out. So at least I know it’s the pcv valve and if worse comes to worse I’m going to replace it myself. Just have never heard anyone mention this noise or have any discussion on it.

Probraly some Toyota dealers, or any other dealers in big cities, don’t give a horse’s rear end about customer’s issues. Either too lazy, or don’t know what they doing.

Combination of both, it’s been a complete fiasco dealing with 2 different dealers and even the “field tech”. I’m at the point I’m gonna order a new pcv valve and replace it and see what happens. Not to mention my oil is like black and smells terrible. I changed it at 1k miles break in. Now only 3k miles since last oil change and black oil…. Something is definitely wrong

I don’t know this “field tech” is. Change engine oil and filter, and send used oil sample to Blackstone Labs, and see what results. If results bad, probraly have to deal with BS from dealers about warranty.

Yeah I might do that, the field tech is a technician sent from Toyota corporate to help dealers figure problems out

curious what oil you used? i don't want this to turn into an oil type/OCI debate but, i let the dealer do ONE oil change and they said they used mobil 1. i was surprised at how dark colored it was after 1000 miles. some here chimed in and said color does not matter. that may be the case, i am no expert. but, i have checked and changed oil many thousands of times and never seen oil appear so dark in color after 1000 miles. i dunno?

as for changing the PCV, it is easy. you just need the right size socket and with a few extensions you can reach it by going in from the passenger side along the back of the motor. just be careful to not over-torque.

Pcv valve is one drivers side. I use amsoil signature series

yes, i know the pcv is on the driver's side. as i said, it is easier (for me) to access from the passenger side along the back of the engine with extensions and a socket. you do you. best of luck.

Will do. Dealer listened to it and so these engines are noisy, zero effort to find the noise. Pcv valve from my research and ownership of 3rd gen tacoas, this noise isn’t supposed to happen

Pcv valves IIRC are very cheap and typically comically easy to swap out.

Wouldn't it be better just to spend the 15$ and 15minutes to replace it yourself?

What's your time and gas worth dealing with the dealership? Not taking away from the fact that they should handle it, but at some point, you know....

Hmmm. how much noise could a faulty PCV valve make?
A plastic PCV valve at that.
    You sure OP?

I totally agree I ordered the new pcv and hose today, will be in tomorrow. I’m going it myself. So fed up with these dealers who don’t want to fix a dam thing or spend time diagnosing issues without the engine light being on

I wish I could post the video. It’s super loud and with my stethoscope I traced it right to the pcv you can hear it most loud there. Clicking and rattling away. Further you get away from the pcv the quieter the sounds gets. Towards the front of the valve cover you can barely hear it through the stethoscope. I’m almost 100 percent certain it’s a problem with the valve. If it’s not then I have no idea what else it could be considering the source and area of the noise
