I want to get a PA system but I am wondering if anyone that has one, is it even worth it and do you even use it much?

You can get a cheap CB radio with a PA function and simply add an under hood metal horn type speaker. Gives you a cheap PA and a somewhat useful (we use Ham Radios) radio in one package.

I had a PA in my last 4x4, with my Cobra 29 WX NW ST. Wasn't worth the effort. Don't remember the wattage of the power horn, but it was mounted under the hood and wasn't particularly loud. Also, no other mod will make you feel more redneck. :D

    Get a cb, that's a useful mod.

A pa speaker is like $12 on Amazon. I have one because it's a fun toy, but it can get you in trouble...fast. In all honesty it's not a very functional mod but for $10 and being easy as hell to install, why not

Fun and games until your friendly neighborhood LEO catches you, then it's a fancy ticket.

You need an external amplifier or an amplified PA Speaker. SPECO sells a 20w amplified PA horn that works pretty well, so if you're in the vicinity of your vehicle (like a 20 ft radius) you can hear it pretty well. If you're going to be like 50 ft away, you'll want something that's 50w or more amplified.

If you have an extra channel on your audio amp, that usually works, just turn up the gain until you start to hear distortion and bring it down again.

Having a CB or HAM on PA is extremely useful when your vehicle is maybe 50-100 feet away from your tent or whatever activity you're currently working on.

Mine was 55 watts, but I'm not sure if it was amplified? This was like 12 years ago so my recollection is slim.

Seems like there is mixed opinion on this. I mean I know I would have no purpose for this but to mess around, yell at people who dont know how to drive, and yell at people who don't get out of the way for emergency vehicles and block them in.

I have one, with a secret kill switch because I had friends who thought it was funny to try yell at others with it. I like it just in case of emergency, but know your laws. It might be illegal to have on your truck, and the last thing you want is getting arrested for "impersonating a police officer".
All in all, you wont use it nearly as much as you think you will and it is not necessary.

*I guess I should add that I originally installed because I worked at a remote backcountry camp and it was our emergency siren/pa.

Just don't be a knuckle head with it.
