Took my truck to mechanic and says my rear axle seal on the passenger side is leaking. Doesn’t look like it’s spraying all over the wheel or tire.
Do I have time to put it off or should I get it done as soon as a I can?
I’m strapped for funds after having my driveshaft rebuilt (previous owner butchered it so it cost more than it normally would have).

The answer is obvious- fix it and do both sides while you’re at it. Right now it looks like a small leak but sometimes these just puke oil and then you’re brakes are ruined too.

    Yup, you be leakin.
It should be fixed as quickly as you can. Oil covered brakes dont work all that well in the best case. Dont work at all or cook and catch fire in the worst.

How difficult is it to do the work myself? I don’t have a press but can get one if it’s cheaper than taking to a drivetrain shop.

You’d have to pull drums to see if it’s made it’s way onto the shoes. I’m all about doing work myself- not only to save money but to learn too. Nowadays with the internet and auto parts stores that lend specialty tools it’s a piece of cake.

Yeah I definitely agree. Does anyone have preferences on where to get parts. I saw low range offroad has a kit for sale. or should I just go oem?

I usually like going with OEM for this type of stuff. Usually if you find online pricing that’s pretty decent you can print it out and take to a local dealer and they’ll likely price match. I would recommend that when you pull the axle you also check the bearing for wear. A lot of times you’ll get a seal leak because the axle besting is worn and then there’s slop. To replace the bearing you’ll need a press but that’s not needed for seal replacement. If your fluid is fairly new and trying to cut cost you can jack up just the 1 side and you’ll loose little to no fluid.

My truck is non ABS. The kits on ebay by aircabinman and others are only for trucks with ABS.
I priced out parts from mcgeorge Toyota and it will run me $200 for everything. Then theres this tool recommended from ebay thats about $120 to push out the old bearings. I'd also need to get a press from harbor freight which is around $150

The bearing I think is original but I'll inspect for wear when I pull the axle. Haven't checked condition of fluid either (only owned the truck 1.5 years.)
I don't have a press so I'm hoping I don't have to do the bearing otherwise ill have to buy a press/the bearing tool on ebay. Or take the axles to a drivetrain shop.

That's jacked up what they did to yours. That's like my biggest fear ever, leaving a vehicle to shop for repair. Hasn't happened for 19 years. :fingerscrossed:

Oh that's right OH YEAH THAT'S RIGHT.... Anywho, Didn't someone here have a butchered rear axle? Like the shaft had all these gouge marks from trying to press the bearing and stuff...oh man makes me shiver just thinking about it

My truck is the non TRD model. I've always wanted an Electronic diff locker. Wonder if nows the time to just pull one of those from a donor truck and do the swap. thoughts?
