Is it still worth buying a 2023 Tacoma?

the new gen is just around the corner with the possible hybrid and maybe even EV version along with the 2.4T riding on the new platform. is it still worthwhile to buy a current gen Tacoma? price has definitely gone down quite a bit from earlier this year, my local dealer just emailed me a quote for a 2023 Tacoma TRD Offroad 4wd for $40k before tax and fees, that's zero dealer markups. i'm very tempting, but also hesitating for the reasons stated above. someone may say the current Tacoma is a rock solid, no gimmicky off road truck, and the styling is way easier on eyes than the new Tundra, which most certainly the next gen Tacoma will be sharing design language. if you need to buy a midsize truck down the road, would you go with the 2023 Tacoma or wait for the next gen?

You answered your own question. Buy the 3rd gen Taco for a reliable, tried and true truck.

It doesn’t get the greatest mpg. It’s not an EV. Doesn’t have the greatest towing capacity. Blah blah blah. But there is a reason Toyota sells so many.

Depends how soon you need it. If near future I’d get a third gen. If you can wait a few years into the new model run to get the bugs out I’d probably get that.

Yes it is worth it to buy the last of the 3rd gens. It will be one of THE most sought after as it is the last year of the 3rd generation (assuming 2024 is a new model year). I would not trust the first year of a brand new generation ESPECIALLY if it's going to the 4 cylinder turbo.... Just look at all the quality issues and crap with the new Tundra. I'd say buy the 2023 and you'll have a truck that runs forever without any problems.

The main reason I bought my truck was the ability to option it with a naturally aspirated motor paired to a manual transmission.

If I was interested in something with more tech or if HP and MPG was a concern I'd probably go back to a half ton.

I’m not one to buy the first 2 years of a new model.
All new models have issues that need worked out.

I’d be looking at a 2026 model at the earliest.
    Or a 2023 now.

Case in point, look at the 2015’s. A nice clean late model 2nd gen sells now for around original MSRP.

I imagine the 4th gen being very expensive due to inflation and cost of materials in general.

Depends what you're looking for and what your wallet can afford comfortably. Everyone says "EV" will get cheaper, but in the history of our existence, everything goes up and rarely down. My '23 TRD OR is slated to arrive in Dec. Sure I could wait for the next gen, but I'm not super interested in a hybrid truck or EV just yet. Maybe in 10 years once the technology is more stable and our infrastructure is improved for it.

Depends on when you need it, I guess. The third gen is a great truck but definitely overdue for an upgrade. If it were me, and I was just buying to buy, I'd wait.

Buy the 3rd gen and then wait for the kinks to get worked out of the 4th gen. Give it a few years and get the 4th gen and you got 2 tacomas. Can’t beat that.

I don’t know of any official information on the 4th gen, so I’d just be speculating, and I would guess anyone else’s comparison would be built on speculation as well.

Dumped the Tacoma, that's all it needed.
There are still bugs in late run 3rd gen’s… think buying a brand new product is a good idea..?

see how many issues the Tundra has in some tundra forums and think a bit more about it.

There has been a lot of threads for tundra having issues.
Seen a few early lemons with transmission replacements

Personally don’t like the new tundra they sit super low and are really boxy. The headlights extend too far down and the grill blends into the bumper not a fan of the look and if it does carry over to Tacoma I’ll be glad I didn’t wait for the 4th gen. Or they go opposite give it more ground clearance and make it more bad ass either way I’ll still be happy with my 22

Whatever you decide to do, just remember you don’t want to question yourself the “what ifs”. You can’t go wrong with the 23, but if you're wanting the new gen, then just wait. That’s assuming the new gen hits the road next year. Rumor was it was going this year, so no one except the execs in Japan and some other higher ups sworn to secrecy know for sure.

Personally I would not mess around with an EV or small 4 banger with turbos.

i think the best year is/was 2022 if you can still get one. the parts were still plentiful.

the '23's are being built with lower quality parts that were rejected, but they figure now they should just use them in the 2023 model year rather than toss them. most components for the '23's are coming from a pile of rejected and mediocre parts at best, that were stacked behind the back of the building until someone could examine them and decide what to do. i wouldn't be surprised if a part from a Gen 2 that was on the very bottom of the pile made it into a 2023 tacoma. they're definitely scraping together whatever is left to build the last of the turd gen.

my advice, get a '22 tacoma or ford ranger.

Edit:; are you fan bois that easily triggered? good grief.

why yes i think you should get a '23 tacoma. they are and will always be the best.

No money, all went to truck...
Is there evidence of this? I'd like to see it, this is a pretty wild claim to make.

Another thing to add, you can't go wrong even if you find yourself not wanting the truck in a few years. The market is so hot, you'll sell it with very little loss..

We bought the last year of the 4th gen Rav4 hybrid (2018) before the redesigned 2019 came out with better body lines, better MPG, and many creature improvements. We now have a 2022 5th gen Rav4 hybrid and I can with certainty the 2018 is the better vehicle (sans MPG). Not saying this will hold with the new Tacoma but it is virtually certain the 2.4T will NOT get significantly better MPG than the V6. '23 could be the best year ever to get a Tacoma.
