Is it really okay to go 10,000 miles between oil changes?

I took my 2019 4-cylinder Tacoma in for its first 5,000 mile service and all the dealer did was rotate the tires and do a software update to the radar cruise control because he said there was a problem with it detecting vehicles that weren't there. I was told that the oil would only be changed every 10,000 miles with synthetic oil.

Is that right? Should I plan on continuing to do oil changes every 10,000 miles after the warranty runs out?

Yes. That’s what the manual recommends. Changing it more often is just wasting money

I also have a 2019, personally I'm going to change it every 5k. I'll take it to the dealer at 10k for the free one but I'll do 5k myself. I don't care what they say 10k seems like a lot of mileage between oil changes especially if you're planning on keeping the truck for a long time after the warranty period. That's my opinion.

Theoretically yes, it should be fine to do it every 10,000 miles if you use full synthetic oil.
As your engine wears down over time, it will continue to lose metal shavings, causing the oil to have particles build up in it, giving the engine a harder time. This is why some people install the catch can.
I will personally be doing mine every 5,000 miles just to keep it cleaner (without catch can). That's what I ended up doing for my 05' Sequoia and it had no issues until the ECM crapped out.

You should be fine, I change my oil every five thousand and filter ten thousand. I do cut open the filter to inspect for any sludge build up or particles caught in the filter media, so far no problems.

I think the biggest thing is to make sure the oil you are using is rated as SN Plus anything else inferior.

I stick between 5k-7.5k using full synthetic. Have been doing that for years in all of my vehicles and have never had any problems.

Modern synthetics and engine tolerances are so good that theoretically there's actually no problem with pushing your oil changes even longer than 10,000 miles (although not recommended). As an ongoing in house experiment I change my Jetta GTI at 25,000 mile intervals and have 202,000 miles on the clock with no compression loss.

Every 3500 miles for me but I only drive 7500 miles annually. Pretty much all of my driving involves short trips, towing or offroading. For my uses I'd never push it to 10,000 miles. If I was a highway commuter? Sure.

I'm pretty sure the design engineers at Toyota know more about their engine than I do. So far 85k on the clock and I've only changed the oil 8 times.

The only real way to know is to send samples to Blackstone for analysis.
I've always been an early and often guy. But after having problems anyway I decided to do some analysis on my Subaru. I sent in a 6400 mi sample and they said no signs of ware try 8k.
Now I'm not gonna push it to much as an analysis cost as much as a oil change.
But if I'm gone on a trip I'm not gonna panic and get my oil changed asap I know I'm good to wait till I'm home.

Oil companies just love it when people dump full synthetic oil down the drain more often than they have too. Make the rich richer is my moto.

Oil change interval on the Subi is 6k btw so 8 would be 33% over.
Older I get no matter how vigilant I am on maintenance never really seems to get me anywhere.
Seems like its ether a stud or dud when its assembled.

While it should be fine at 10k it depends on your driving conditions, are you towing a lot? Do you take the truck off road often? If you do id change it before 10k

I ended up changing the oil myself at 1500 miles. Then again at 5K. I plan on going to 5-7.500 intervals. Only reason I did the 1500 was to flush anything that got loose in those first months of ownership. Yeah, yeah, today's engines are sooooo much better I know.

Funny I’ve never heard once in here any owner telling another owner that changing their new tires for something else is a waste of money.

But, oil threads are almost always like this. Most of what we do on here is a waste of money. Including myself having a truck as a 4th vehicle.
