Is it possible to have a tonneau cover that also allows for a cap???

I have been asking all my truck owner friends and have come up short. I really like the tonneau covers for the trucks since you can throw groceries etc back there on a daily basis with out obstructing your vision. I also do some camping and love the advantages of a cap while camping, especially for storing extra gear or even sleeping in when it gets real nasty out. However, I do not like daily driving with a cap. I don't like the way it makes the truck look or the blind spots it creates. Has anyone come across a tonneau cover that does not affect the top "rails" of the bed so you can take it off and secure a cap on from time to time?

even if you did find a workable solution, the hassles:

    1. removing the cover (barely 1 person)
    2. putting on a cap (requires at least min. 2 people, prob 3 due to weight)
    3. storage of a cap
    4. if your lucky you have a contraption to raise lower the cap in your garage (rarely see this, usually self made)
    5. could only use 1 or the other, never at the same time
    6. fit would be shoddy as your overlapping mount points on the cap/cover.

this might be workable with the new oem cover since it wont cover the rails, but IMO its going to look like crap.

If you do want a tonneau cover that doesn't effect the bed at all my friend has an extang trifold on his Silverado and that doesn't require any mod to the bed to rails. Check it out. www.extang.com

Yeah I know about the cap storage and putting it on and off. My dad has two trucks with caps that I have to help him put on and off regularly. If I had to pick only one, I would probably go with the cap.

With any tonneau on, even between the rail mount ones you can't mount a cap without removing it because you won't be able to mount the clamps. I think your best bet is to get a tonneau and some kind of soft cap like a bestop or soft topper. Those can go on and off with one person in a few minutes. I do this on my truck and I can leave the tonneau mounts in the rails.

Do you know what model it is? They don't have any for the 2016 yet but the 2015 has 9 possible models.

I am not trying to use both at the same time. I will be using a tonneau cover 99% of the time and the times that I chose to go camping, I will take the tonneau cover off and put a cap on.

I think that will totally work! Simple clamps to secure the tonneau cover with out any permanent mounts. Now to find pricing...

I don't think there is a market for what you are requesting. You couldn't have both covers on at the same time because, well, that makes no sense.

I would get the Tonneau you want then get something like a Bestop or Soft Topper for the cap. Both easy to put on and take off as you need to.

I wouldn't have both of them on at the same time. I would switch them. Most of the tonneau covers I have experience with have permanent rails to mount on the truck so the bed rails are no longer flat making it impossible to use a cap even after you take the cover off. I know the extang will do the trick but they are really expensive. I will keep looking but that might be my choice.

Wow, thanks for that link. I don't really like the look of the factory cover, but I am the least handy person in the world. I also have a bad back, so installing anything that takes more than 5 minutes is a bad idea for me. So I was thinking that I would be stuck with the factory cover. But this looks totally doable! :)

Been doing a little research as well now. The gator evo seems to be another good choice, not quite as easy to install, but still incredibly easy. Costs quite a bit less too.

Caps can be had with adapters that secure the cap to the rails. Find a cover that does as well.

Why don't you just get a tonneau for driving and a truck tent for camping? That's my plan.

I specifically want a separate tent so I can store stuff in the bed of the truck.
