So i was at work and the weather today was positively brilliant and I just washed the truck yesterday so I figured I'd eat lunch outside and pop the tailgate down and use it like a bench.

Now I'm a bigger guy, 6'0 255lbs, I felt the suspension sag a bit and i was expecting that. I'm not worried the suspension since you'd put things that are way heavier than me in the bed without blinking.

I just want to know how much stress the tailgate itself can withstand. I don't want to be doing this a lot if it could bend or break something over time.

I believe this was more of an issue with the 2nd generation trucks, thus a bunch of companies made tailgate reinforcements. I think 2016+ the tailgate has better accommodated for its actual use.

    :facepalm:Its a truck!

Sorry, its just that it really is a truck, so the tailgate is fine. No carwash hood dancing though, you will totally bend that! :)

I jump up on mine when loading and unloading. I don't see any issues with it. Seems to be pretty sturdy.

Your tailgate will be fine, I dropped fridges, stoves and other shit over 200lbs on my taco tailgates, never had any damage.

Yeah, but you’ll bend the hell out of the hood if you dance on it, what about that?! :boink:

I think sitting on the tailgate is literally the only reason to own a pickup truck.

Yuppers, one of the reasons to own a truck! Sunny day, drop the tail gate crack a beer and seat your ass on the tail gate..... May have enjoyed 40F today here in NH in this very manner :anonymous:

I'm 6'2" @ 265 and my wife is 130 lbs and we have both sat and ate lunch/dinner after hikes and kayaking trips on our 2nd gen. The 3rd gen tailgates are more robust, I am sure you're totally fine.

Why do I get the feeling we're about to be buried with posts about broken tailgates...I'm holding on to dear life now.

    I kid! Honest!

what good would a truck be if you can't use the tailgate to sit, eat on, party on lol!

It's my first truck and I'm just being a bit more careful than usual.

For instance yesterday when I was at the touch-less car wash I didn't let the dryer finish because it was pushing in my hood and rattling my wipers way too hard, flipped my bed mat over too. I was so worried I'd get something damaged that I just got out of there and then checked the whole truck. I'm paranoid I guess.
