Worse yet, AAA doesnt go off the pavement. Badlands Rescue and others typically charge a $500 base price when they have to go off the pavement.

If I was stuck and asked a buddy with a 4x4 to tow me out and they refused because they didn't want to damage their TRUCK, my jaw would literally fuggin' drop. I've never heard of something like that...

Unpopular opinion: Too many people seem to think the only way to recover somebody is to attach a snap strap and goose it. There are ways to safely and carefully make do with less than ideal equipment in a pinch if you go extra slow and dip your feet into the water to see exactly how much (or little) pulling force it's gonna take to do the job.

But don't hook anything to a tow ball, that's one rule that's in stone.

Great stuff, but another tip for especially for the chain users. Always add some sort of dead weight (even a flannel will help) to the middle of straps, ropes, chains, winch lines. any of them snapping can be horrible.

Also, don't use a winch as a tow line it can mess up the gears!

Well, I think one would know a friend would say that a long time before something like that ever happened... as for the original person saying it- the difference is assuming the stuck people were not in the booneys and were not in any danger, as he said he would have even given them a ride if that was the case- he just didnt want to tow with his truck. I think that was ok now that it was better clarified.

You need to get an ARB bumper and a warn winch. It’s the only way.

Yeah, but we're talking about Tacomas here, not Honda Civics. Damaging the truck isn't a concern unless you do something really stupid. Offering a ride is a nice gesture, but it doesn't really solve the problem.... I once towed my dad's 2500 Silverado out of the snow in my old Outback, and the car was fine. That truck probably weighed three times what the Subaru did. Again, I literally don't know anyone who would refuse that request and stick me with a bill from a tow truck. Maybe his corner of the world is different from mine...

Here too- but then there’s the guys that tried to help and ended up pulling off the rear end of that Taco we’ve all seen on YouTube. Experience with proper towing and recovery is certainly needed in these situations!

Yes, I think so. I really like mine. But, I acknowledge that they are not everyone’s cup of tea (esp on third gen).

I think it’s everyone’s civic duty to render aid safely to the best of their ability and training.

I don’t want my sister stopping to pull out some dude’s sedan at night on a infrequently traveled road. She’s able, has the equipment in her truck... but, it’s not safe.

As I am paramedic who used to be on a swat team, I keep a healthy medkit that I would use to help in car crashes. I also keep body armor and some human recovery gear to provide medical assistance with something catastrophic (driving up on an officer down situation, active shooter, whatever). I also keep an LZ kit and a few other items.

As a ham radio operator I have comms and am fixin to install a cell booster as well.

As a truck owner I carry three harbor freight moving blankets and hot packs to keep people warm and I keep recovery gear for self recovery and for helping people out as I am able.

Should everyone set their truck up like mine? No. Especially considering that I don’t use my truck bed for work and this equipment doesn’t take up space that I would otherwise use. Should everyone carry equipment to place a surgical airway and to do a field amputation? Absolutely not.

So, do I think it’s a civic duty to perform recoveries when they are undertrained or under equipped? No.

I’ve pulled another Tacoma out of a snow ditch with a climbing rope around the hitch ball it worked fine. Obviously it was an old clinking rope I don’t climb on anymore
