Is it ok for spare tire to be 1" smaller in diameter?

LT tires tend to have 15-18mm or more. My 235/85r16 Falken Wildpeaks had 17mm new.

Falken Wildpeaks are 10/16th (20/32) so 15.88mm, but either way, thats a fuck ton of tread! Bet you can get through some good mud with those! hows the sound on the highway?

Ah I was misreading 32nds as mm! Thanks for pointing that out.

I'm in CO so mostly dealing with loose rocks and dirt, or snowy icy road conditions. In both of those situations they are fantastic. Never tried them in mud - maybe a few puddles with dirt underneath but not true mud.

Highway noise was barely any different from the tires that were on it when I bought the truck (blizzaks). There is still more wind noise than tire noise.

Overall very happy with the tires, except I would go C load next time to get a softer ride off road and not get tossed around as much. Yes I do air down.

    \/ Nailed it!
If the TPMS sensor needs to be in rotation how does the PVC TPMS bomb work?

Autel has a few tools that can upload IDs into the 3rd Gen ECU. Just do not use 2nd Gen sensor IDs! They will not work in the 3rd Gen.
This popped up on another thread:
    /\ conflicting information?

@JasonLee and I were talking about the 5th spare having its own ID. Out in the field installing the spare, removing the flat a distance away from the truck, then you would need a proven TPMS tool to remove the 4th and upload the 5th ID.

Are you asking, why do the TPMS sensors still read when people put them in a pressurized tube? Good question--I think b/c they also turn on when air pressure drop or is added quickly. So, I reckon they turn on when the tube is pressurized. Why they would continue to stay on while the pressure remained constant...no idea.

You’ll be fine, just keep it 50mph\50 miles or less.
Assuming you don’t have a patch kit you can use instead, don’t worry, just do it.

But if it concerns you, just think of what happens when you replace a spare tire with zero miles into a set of three that may have 40+k. It’s going to be a mismatch in height, and may affect handling & stability.
Or the same goes for those millions of vehicles that don’t come with full size spare tire in the trunk, but have mini-spares from the factory.

Not according to the manual, mentions everything from which end of the wheel nut goes in, and not burning your hands on the discs, but no mention at all of moving tires around to avoid differentials exploding.

    http://www.ttguide.net/if_you_have_a_flat_tire-148.html

    Close though;
Also, not only can the following system not be utilized fully, it may actually negatively effect the drive-train components: ●4WD system

That is for all the wheels being of the same size as the spare.

The OP was asking about a 1" Smaller spare wheel being used with 3 larger wheels.
If you have a smaller size spare wheel, it is best to put it on the front axle and keep the rear wheels of the same size due to the differential. The front axle diff is open and will not be damaged with two different size wheels if Not put into 4WD.

OP has a Sport, open diff on the rear, auto lsd doesn't count. Your correct with an Off Road though.

Thats not a good comparison. That tire is deflated. Those space saver tires need to be inflated before you can use them, there should be a crappy 12v air pump in the tool kit to air up that tire.

As small and skinny as those spares are, they all say to put them on a non-drive wheel... but no one ever reads that or takes the time to swap a good tire to the drive wheel and put the spare on a non-drive wheel.

I'm not swapping front to back on a dark rainy night on a lonely road. TOYOTA is just gonna have to live up to its durability reputation till I get another tire, because if it don't, they'll be hearing from me too! lmao!

I always see mid 2000s impalas with a spare on the front, sitting at like 20 psi, and 90% bald. Then the spare goes flat and now they have a tow bill in addition to a new spare and a new normal tire.

As a rule I always tossed out the temp spares and got a good used one instead.

The spare I have now is the stock in the "16 inch wheel. I'm on my second tire set and had in mind to get another matched wheel and tire, but I carry a patch kit and if a tire blows out or sidewall gets damaged, I'll have get a new matched axle set of two, so there's that, screw it lol!

Last year when i got a new set of tires i keep the best old one for a spare.
I have ray10s so i bought a steely for the spare about $80
    Now have full size spare
Still have to do some hammering to get it to fit under truck

Drove home a couple times in the past in one of my wheelers with a 40" tire on one side and a 35" tire on the other. Pulled a little, but not horrible ;) But on a typical Tacoma, you probably wont notice much with that small of a tire size difference. If you're driving with a 30" and a 33", obviously worth it if you can to put the spare in front. The rear diff should handle it if you end up mix matching, as its probably the same as you naturally taking tighter right turns and longer left turns on your every day drive.
