Fuel level in tank doesn't make any difference when the in tank fuel pump isn't on.

You have to depressure the system before removing the fuel lines.

The less fuel the better but if you remove the fuel pump relay and crank the truck over until it dies, the system won’t be pressurized anymore.

the best advice I can give is take the fuel cap off to relieve any pressure and put it back on, wrap a rag around your wrist and use quality flare/line wrenchs. If you round off the captured fitting, you are screwed. If you think you can tough out gasoline on your body then you havent had it leak into your arm pit... it burns and burns, jumping up and down and cussing type burn.

    You just need one,
Get a good maker wrench because those line nuts will want to slip and round the edges in the wrench

And have a 5 gallon bucket available because the fuel will want to drain all over the place after you break the lines loose, have your eyes protected if the pressure of gas hits you in the face.

I take the gas cap off and leave it overnight to depressurize and I get minimal gas coming out.

I’ve replaced my filter many many times, never had an issue.
The last time for whatever reason the pressure was still there after my cap was off, probably from the engine side and I got sprayed down with gasoline when the nut came loose , uggg

A lot of good advice already about de-pressurizing the line, and using line wrenches.

I'd also say, if you are in the rust belt and the fittings are rusted and the corners of the joint are looking weak, be prepared to abandon the line wrenches and go to vise grips. Don't completely round them off before making the switch. You want some flat area left on the fittings to get a good grip.

Totally agreed. The proper tools can save you a bunch of downtime. A bought a line wrench just for this job and I’m glad I did.

    Going off memory I think it’s a 14mm

Be super careful with the excess gas and fumes. I like to wash up before starting up the vehicle or re-connecting the battery.

If you are working on your back......suggest a pair of ear plugs.

I was changing the fuel filter on our '02 Chevy Trailblazer. Easy task, the filter is under the driver's side just in front of the fuel tank. As I was releasing the pressure, the gas was squirting into a container. But some had to drip onto my arm, run down my arm, onto my face then into my right ear..........AAAAAAGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! :bananadead::bananadead::bananadead::eek::eek::eek::eek: Spent the next 30 minutes flushing my ear with a syringe. My ear hurt for 2 days.

A set of ear plugs would have avoided this trauma.

Only if your luck is like mine and it landed just the right way to impact one of the threaded holes enough to egg shape things.

That is about all you might damage.
