I've owned my 2012 reg. cab for almost 7 months now. I just cleared 10000 miles the other day and it's started jerking like crazy going from a stop in first gear. The power train warranty states they cover the transmission and all internal parts for 3years/36k miles. I don't dog my truck, its my DD, and I have only owned straight drive vehicles. I've read from other people with similar cases they don't cover the clutch in this warranty. I'm worried as to what they will tell me considering my clutch should not be gone at 10k miles. My last truck had 126k on the original clutch. Any insight on this??

For a 2012 I would think it will fall under the bumper to bumper warranty.

Unfortunately its highly unlikely. The clutch would fall into the same category as break pads and oil. They are consumable wearable parts that are expected to be replaced. Obviously we all know the clutch should not wear out like that, but there's no way a dealer will accept responsibility for a faulty clutch. Its too easy for them to just put the blame on operator error. Unless you have a really good and honest dealer (which is possible, mine is very very generous with warranty work) then its going to be hard. Your truck should have come with a warranty manual... it should say. But the easiest way to get your answer is drop it off at the dealer and see what they say.

If the dealership tries feeding you a line like this, get on the phone with Toyota Customer Service and raise hell. There's no way a clutch should be gone at 10k miles on a brand new truck unless it was beat to hell (even then it shouldn't have worn out that quickly). This should be a warranty claim and covered by the dealership in my opinion.

I have the same problem on my 09. Im out of warrenty with 62,000. Is there some specific part that has gone bad or is the clutch itself to blame?

FYI when I was younger (waaay younger - 14) my friend gave me the keys to her dads car that was a column shift manual, which I had never driven before, let alone heard of. I burned that clutch out in a few hours. And her dad just put a new clutch in the day before.

OK, so I stand corrected. You CAN burn out a clutch if you really work at it. I would hope the new clutches would be more resilient than those 30 - 40 years ago though, especially in a truck.

Babytruck, I actually remember those column shift manuals. Never had a chance to drive one but they seem like they'd be a PITA!

FWIW, an improperly adjusted clutch that doesn't fully release would fry a clutch in a hurry. If that were the case, you could easily get that covered under warranty if you could prove it was the culprit.

You could have a broken spring or arm, which would be covered, period.

My buddy said the slave cylinder could be leaking (haven't checked). It seems like it only does it really bad half the time I'm driving. My last truck I sold with 126k on the original clutch. I don't tear my stuff up. Toyota is going to check it out tomorrow.

Damm...my last manual (88 4runner) went close to 300,000 miles before needing clutch work. If it did go out at 10,000 i'd think they'd be more than happy to fix it...then again it's a wear item so maybe not. Good luck.

The slave cylinder isn't leaking. I have a feeling the flywheel is warped/hot spots.

Clutch is 3yr 36K miles unless they can PROVE it was abused.

Newer clutches are less reliable due to no asbestos being used now.

The clutch in my 2009 Tacoma (company truck) has been squealing, slipping, chattering, etc for the last 30K miles. It's got 70K on it now. I don't expect it to see 100K. I don't drive it any differently than my personal truck, and no differently than the other five or so stick shift vehicles I've owned/been issued. This one just seems to have a sucky clutch.

My wife’s Camaro clutch went out at 12,000 miles. The pressure plate was toast. You could push the fingers like they were loose teeth. You could see that it got really hot. Chevrolet wouldn’t warranty anything. I called the Rep. and the customer line but no luck.

This is Screamingeagle, well it depends on the dealership. I have been through alot of crap from Toyota. I have posted here as well. Week before last was my aribration. I received my letter on Fri. Thay DENIED my buy back on my 2010 with 23K miles. But they agreed to replace the clutch again under the TSB 66-11 again.
The clutch should last 100K miles easy. Getting 15k or 2k in my last one is pure shit. I'm 52 and drive other manuals, including my Z06 vette. I'm not screwing them up, as they want to tell me i am.
The clutch falls under the "Wear item" bull shit i say. Most likely if it is a defective clutch they will replace it under warranty, but beware, Toyota will screw u.

I haven't looked at the TSB, is it for both 4 and 6 cylinders? I took it to Toyota. Two master techs drove it and one even rode in the truck with me. The tech claimed it bucked because the engine has rubber motor mounts (really? Is that a joke??) and when he rode with me I could barely get it to buck but I stalled out twice. He told me to keep driving it and if it got worse to bring it back. I plan on taking it back again.

find out if it has a CDV (clutch delay valve) if this valve is screwed up it could account for the jerky jerky jerk.
