Is buying a 2010 with 150K a bad idea?

    EDIT: Added pictures and info

I have been chatting with the owner of a 2010 TRD Off-Road who is selling it for $15,000. He has been keeping up with scheduled maintenance and said the only thing it needs will be new shocks (I figured $800 ballpark) though he did just get a wheel bearing replaced so I assume the others are soon to follow. I'm wondering if it is worth spending $10,000 more on a newer truck with around 60k-80k miles or should I go with this one?

includes everything in the pictures. Has not had frame recall fixed so I figured I can get that done right after I bought it. Also has the new leaf springs from recall, just not installed (he was going to do it himself but hasn't)

    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Less than 15k miles per year.... less than I put on a vehicle.

you’ll be able to tell how it’s been taken care of... and the price isn’t bad in my opinion (generally)

Is the truck in a region where they salt the roads? Put it on a lift if it is and have some one really look it over for you.
15K for a truck with 150K and is 10 years old.
Tacomas are way over priced and over rated. Bid your time. I think you will do better.
Ill get ripped for saying that because there are so many people that will tell you to pull the trigger. Its not their problem but will be yours.

It's from Florida, so my only worry would be floods. I'm planning on getting a mechanic to look over what ever used vehicle I end up getting

What floods? Unless it was in Port St. Joe during Michael it should be fine.

And with the '21s here its 11 model years old, lowering your annual average.

More expensive than I would want, but that doesn't mean it's not what the market will bear.

If it’s a 4WD, that’s not a horrible price. If it’s a prerunner, you gotta ask yourself if a prerunner would make you happy long term.

Look at the mudflaps. If it still has the ridiculously long factory front mud flaps, that’s a good sign that it hasn’t been thrashed off road.

That truck probably cost $30K new. I'm talking actual drive off the lot price, not sticker. By the time you pay the original purchaser $15K you have as much money invested in it as he did. And you'll get to pay for all of the repairs.

But that is probably a fair price. In my experience you get roughly 1/2 the original purchase price back at 10 years and/or 150,000 miles. This is why I think it is usually a better idea long term to just buy new and keep it 10 years or 150,000 miles. When you get 1/2 your money back and apply it to a new one you never have a big monthly payment and it would be extremely rare to have an expensive repair.

I got a 10 with 118k on it . I wouldn’t trade my truck even for the unicorn I would want. Find out if the frame has been replaced. If it hasn’t you could get a new frame. You still have time if you get it

I can't believe I'm biting in this because I'm a bit of a moron. I would buy most cars used, but the Tacoma has silly resale. It may be a fantastic truck, but if you have the cash I would buy new so you have an idea what the problems will be. If you don't have the cash you could have found a great truck. It depends if you are the kind of person that let's a vehicle

So I have experience with almost this exact same scenario. 4 yrs end of Jan i purchased my DCLB SR5 4x4 with 155k. At that point I got it all caught up on the maintenance items. Since then the only thing I have had to do repair wise that was of no fault of my own has been wheel bearings and the serpentine belt idler and tensioner pulleys. The frame was replaced a yr after I purchased it for the rot recall. I now am pretty close to 250k miles.
I replaced my engine with one with 130k after I hydrolocked it offloading it has been about 40k since I did that.

If you don't beat the shit out of it the truck will last you for a very long time. There are several threads about how many miles people have on their trucks and the repairs and maintenance they've done. At 15k that isn't a bad price I paid a little over 12 for mine and it isn't as high of an optioned truck. Never hurts to haggle though. If he has records and stuff of the maintenance that's even better.

Depending on where you get it from, they may offer you a dealership warranty that can cover as little as powertrain all the way up to bumper to bumper. I got a 2 year/20,000 mile warranty with my 2013 when I bought it not long ago.

Avoid the situation I’m in right now and make sure to bring a mechanic with you to inspect the truck in and out. Especially the frame!

I bought an 2006 earlier in the year TRD SR5 Pre Runner off-road in pristine condition with only 26K miles all original no wrecks, no salvaged title etc.. from a retired dude around Orlando it just sat in his front yard for what your paying. Yeah I know I got a GREAT deal and Tacomas hold their value but I would say buy used not sticker and be patient I think you could find a similar truck and price with less miles. I know that’s no mileage for a Toyota but my advice is be patient.

FYI...I had the original long flat mud flaps and the truck is virtually new so yeah like other poster stated that would be a good sign.

And yeah it floods in Florida, ALOT!

check for rust on the frame I have some a little surface rust on the frame and hoping to find somebody to sand blast as I can’t do that where I live....here a lot of salt in the air

    Respectfully disagree.....
Tacoma’s are not overrated and the price is more because they last longer on average....I would buy used Toyota over a new Ford, Chevy or Dodge any day of the week...just me

I bought my 2010 TRD O/R A/C M/T with 168k for $14k in 2017 it was immaculate one owner, fat stack of records.

I think you could talk the seller down a grand or two at least.

Miles is nothing on a Toyota so long as there isn't rust.

My Uncle has only ever owned Toyota trucks.

1987 truck with 680k before his sister totaled it.
2001 Tundra with 450k still going original engine and trans etc
2010 with 300k original engine and trans etc

Keep the rust at bay, change the fluids, they run forever, the last time a vehicle with a 100k mile drop dead lifespan rolled off the assembly line was like 1982, just about all cars are capable of crazy mileage with minimal maintenance now.

Always go for the newest and lowest mileage vehicle you can afford. I don’t care what vehicle whether it’s a Tacoma, a Cadillac, corvette, Range Rover the higher the mileage the higher probability of break downs, parts failure and various problems. Dependability and reliability decrease as miles increase. The key is the best you can afford.
