Just wondering cause I'm a noob and don't see much coverage on it? Pros and cons? And cause my co-people say I should've got the AT with crawl control but I prefer MT. Please don't make this a MT vs AT war, just wanna know more about ATRAC and who has actually used it.

It works and its much more simple, I found crawl control only really good with rocks and REALLY low speeds.

I've seen FJ's conquer the crap out of obstacles at low speeds in A-trac mode.

Has been around since ‘09 second gen (someone correct me if I’m wrong). Works really nice. Has saved my butt a couple of times in the snow over the years. Keeps you going by breaking the slipping wheel. Shut it off if you’re in dire need of momentum, since it uses the break system to assist with traction of the non-spinning wheels.

Thanks for the responses guys. I did a search and not much came up for a 3rd Gen. Even read the owner's manual which didn't really talk much about it. Lol. I guess it's an old but very capable system I knew nothing about. Pretty cool.

Brake-based traction control has been required on all vehicles sold in the U.S. since 2012, but most manufacturers have included it since the turn of the millennium. I don't think it's strictly required in 4-low, but ATRAC is just Toyota's specific implementation of regular-old traction control in 4-low.

I don't believe it is unique in any way; I believe every modern vehicle with a low range has some form of brake-based traction control while in 4-low.

And 6MT DOES have 'crawl control'; it's your left foot.

ATRAC has been around since at least 2000 (in Landcruisers) and in Tacoma's since the intro of 2nd gens (2005). Just FYI.

You're talking about VSC. ATRAC is a different system and not required.

Brake-based traction control is a necessary component of VSC, so it's required by default. It is NOT required in low-range (ATRAC is just Toyota's 4-Low-specific brake-based traction control system), but every modern vehicle with a transfer case offers it in 4-Low, AFAIK.

They are two different systems. It is not Traction Control. It's for lateral stability. To keep your car straight and on the road. Take two vehicles up a rutted trail, one with VSC and one without--they will perform exactly the same. VSC does nothing to assist off-road.

ATRAC is active traction control. Primarily for off-road situations (various auto makers have some kind of iterations of this, and not specific to vehicles with 2-sp transfer case). Brakes the wheel that slips to send power to wheels with traction.

Please educate yourself before spewing non-sense.

Literally every vehicle sold in the last 5-10 years "brakes the wheel that slips to send power to wheels with traction". It's great Toyota also enabled traction control in 4-low, but so do all their competitors.

ATRAC IS specific to 4-low, at least as it pertains to Toyota's nomenclature. The thread linked in post #10 of this thread establishes that definitively.

    Read up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_stability_control

A Corolla has VSC, no ATRAC. Try powering up a dirt hill in that car. There's no brake-induced traction going on. Seriously, spend a few minutes on Google on this.
