Is any form of odometer/milage data stored in the ECU?

Say my whole gauge cluster is fucked. I can buy a cheap aftermarket OBD2 gauge to display things like vehicle speed and coolant temps while driving. But, what are my options to keep track of the total vehicle milage if the gauge cluster is in no way salvageable? A scrapyard gauge cluster cannot be adjusted to show MY Tacoma's milage.

I don't need to see the odometer data all the time, but I want to be able to access it when I need to.

As far as I know it's only stored in the cluster on 1st and 2nd gens.

Still better than having none, just keep track of the aproximate milleage on your truck and the cluster when you install it and you will have known miles.

There are places that repair clusters too, you would have to do some research and find a reputable one.

It's all stored on the odometer ROM module on the cluster. You can swap your module to any cluster and it'll keep the milage. It's two screws, and a ribbon cable.

When you get the new (used) gauge cluster, figure out your conversion factor and document it. So if your old cluster shows 100k miles, and the new one shows 80k, then you need to add 20k miles to the indicated mileage.

If you ever plan to sell it, best to document it well, and even take pictures, etc... But you'd still need to check the box on the DMV form that says something to the effect of "indicated mileage is not true mileage." But at least you can show how many miles it actually has for whoever buys it.

That idea is far too advanced for technology that old OP. The 2nd gens do it (and that's the later gen 2nd gens, I'm not sure about the early ones) from what I remember, but not the 1st gens.

You got me curious when Odometer was added to OBD-II, but unfortunately SAE docs are behind an expensive paywall ($90/revision).

Easily on or after 2005. My better intuition tells me that it was really really added on 2012+ models because mine reads it for sure.

Need to check and see if my 04 Saab has it...they may have just added it as a custom PID knowing them though

Not sure why it wasn't with the original release of OBD2 tbh. Its a matter of storing in ECU vs odometer, so can't see security being the issue...maybe its dependent on a CANbus relay and that's why
