I’ve noticed this irregular tapping on mine too, 2023 SR5. I’ve seen a few other threads/ videos with the same but nothing explaining the noise

it's the fuel injector cleaning cycle. sounds really strange especially when you are idling next to a wall like in drive-thru. if it goes away when you rev the engine up, it's normal.

it does not sound normal to me but i am not a mechanic. i park inside a metal outbuilding and my truck does not make that intermittent ticking noise.

the sound in this video is similar to another TW member that has his truck at the dealer. they took the motor apart and are waiting on parts. according to a post, it was suspected there was debris of some type in the engine from assembly.

    my $.02.

Mine does that. I have been told its normal, however it still freaks me out.

For reference my truck is a 2020 with just over 30k miles.

Completely normal. The D4-S fuel system uses both direct and port fuel injectors. It will use each set of injectors based on RPM and load. At idle it will trigger the port injectors and increase fuel pressure to pressure wash the intake ports of oil build up common from direct injection fuel delivery. This is random and can last seconds to several minutes.

That video and post about the tear down is how I came onto this. I’ve heard it before but didn’t think much about it until that tear down. I’ve found several other videos and posts with the irregular tapping though

Mine clatters worse than my Freightliner at work. From what I understand it is pretty normal due to the way it is setup to operate. Still under warranty so I'm not worried.Once I hit 60,001 miles, then I'm going to freak out.....

The cleaning cycle cleans the direct injector; not the intake port.

Interesting, thanks for the feedback everyone. Sounds like it's generally considered normal, so I won't worry about it.

23 tacoma sr5 v6 4x4 with 4600 miles. Started doing exactly that after I changed the oil. Takin her to the dealer tomorrow just in case. Edit... took the truck in and toyota says all is well. Also have another 1000 miles on it now so, if it was a problem, pretty sure something would've happened

Your truck is transgender. It leaves it’s a diesel at idle.

Mines been tapping at idle for past 6 years. I guess being car enthusiasts we are complacent to smooth engine sound at idles however it could be a new technology, definitely hard to digest though...

Mine makes the same noise, except never at idle. It only happens at low speeds when accelerating. It's driving me crazy and I'm not convinced its the injectors.

Not sure what to make of that

following up here with a HILARIOUS find, splash guard clip broke so it was no longer holding in the top front splash shield on the drivers side, so the fan/wind was flapping the splash guard and my half broken plastic clip into the fender metal making the tapping noise. Problem solved!

thanks for the update. there have been so many "is this ticking normal" threads lately that responders are probably getting burned out. i wasn't sure i was hearing your noise in the video but your solution a welcome unicorn.
