I got an ipod classic (gen 5), loaded it with music and plugged it into the usb port of my 2018 Tacoma with Entune Premium. It connects and plays fine. My problem is, when connected to the usb port, it displays "OK To Disconnect." Then all I can do is play/pause on the head unit and adjust volume (maybe next and previous, not sure). I've searched and found that this is normal. It is a pain though. Wnenever I want to change to a different album, playlist, artist, etc, I have to disconnect the ipod.

Has anyone found a workaround for this?

Yes I know I can use my phone to play music and I can set it up beforehand but I'd like to be able to change what I'm listening to without disconnecting the ipod from the usb port.

    TIA.

You might try charging the iPod through the cigarette connector and use a audio cable to the AUX in.

You can change album, artist, playlist through the headunit (Or at least I can). Everything you can do on the iPod you can do through the headunit. I’m traveling so can’t tell you what buttons to press at the moment, but im sure the manual will tell you.

Edit: You know how sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees? I went to the Toyota 2018 Tacoma Owner's Manual and searched the pdf for ipod. Everything you spoke of is on pages 106-110. I printed it out, went to the truck and tried it. Everything I could want and more is displayed on the screen if you know what to do. Thank you for the prodding.

I guess I'm allowed to bump my own thread.

I have over 19,000 songs on my iPod Classic but, when I connect it to the Entune radio and shuffle (because all I do is shuffle), it says I only have 9000 songs. It seems that I had seen on TW somewhere that peoples Entune radios were showing 20,000 and more songs. I'd hate to have updated the harware with an SD card and loaded 19,000 songs on it for naught.

Does anyone have any idea how to get the Entune radio to show that I have over 19,000 song on my iPod Classic? TIA.

Edit: Honestly, I don't fully understand tags. I know that 95% of the songs have Genre which I assume is a tag. Maybe I'm wrong.

Edit: I'm not sure I've figured it out but I have some information which is somewhat confusing. When I look on the ipod, it shows 19402 songs. When I look on the Entune radio, it shows 9402 songs. Maybe the Entune radio does actually see all of the songs but can't display the 10 thousands slot. It's just too much of a coincidence to be otherwise. Ideas?

I have a 64gb iPhone on Bluetooth. Never even crossed my mind to try out my Classic iPod. Just might try it tomorrow!

The ipod classic is great to just leave in the truck and forget, use it when you need it and not tie up the phone. The drawback is, whenever I so much as touch the connector, the ipod disconnects. I've made a harness (that someone else here "invented") but haven't installed yet that moves the usb data connector to the center console and turns the OEM usb connector into a fast charger. The thing that I did differently is use a Quick Charge power source instead of the dc/dc converter that the op used. Someone kindly pointed out to me that the post was old and USB C wasn't around when the OP started the thread. One day I'll get around to installing it.

Put all your music on one (or two) usb thumb drives and insert into port on dash.

There is no need to use an iPod.

When I first started using the ipod in the truck, it worked beautifully. It stayed charged and worked as soon as I selected ipod on the Entune radio. The only problem I had was the ipod would disconnect when the truck side of the USB connector was barely bumped. I've since made a harness to alleviate that problem. The problem now is, whenever I get back into the truck, the ipod battery is discharged and it has to charge up some before it'll power on. Then it takes a couple of minutes, maybe less, to boot up to where it can be used with the Entune radio. The only thing, and it's probably a biggie, is I wiped the ipod and reloaded it. I think I have the ipod settings how I had them but who knows?

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the problem?

I guess an option would to be to make the USB Data power always hot. I've not torn into it yet. I'm sure I can figure it out when I do but it'd be nice to have a heads up before I jump into it. TIA.

Yes, but I loaded Rockbox on my classic after replacing the mechanical disk with microSD cards. 256GiB.

Rockbox has shutdown in addition to standby.

I tried Rockbox when I first got the ipod classic but shuffle was a real pain. It certainly wasn't one touch. I went back to itunes which ain't the greatest either.

I just went with a USB angle adapter and keep the iPod (classic) in the glovebox.ipod-usb-tacoma.jpg

It's clean enough for me and keeps everything from being bumped.

Are you using the right angle usb because of ipod disconnects when the connector is bumped?

Just to keep it flush so I don't smack it, and it gives it a straight line to the glove box (and doesn't put as much stress on the damn cable). I haven't had a problem with it disconnecting (I have a problem with the ipod freezing/crashing a lot, but a quick google search shows I'm not the only one). The picture I posted looks a little shitty, but when I'm in the truck it looks very clean and out-of-the-way, and the cords don't stick out or get bumped or caught on things.

(I don't mind blocking the Qi charging pad button because the thing sucks and I'll eventually use the charging pad space for a ham or CB radio)

The iPod is my wife's old 160gb beast that I found in a drawer and confiscated. The internal HDD failed and I swapped it out with an SD-card drive (that's a fun hack on the old ipods). I considered buying a new one, but they're as expensive as new iphones, and there's just no bang for the buck there.

Yeah, I got mine for $27 on ebay. It's scratched all to hell but its gonna eventually sit in the center console so it doesn't matter. The drive was failed so I did as you and put a sd card in it. And added a new battery.

I got a rubber fast charger pad that I'm gonna put on top of the crappy OEM Qi charger. It fits perfectly. It works so far but I've not installed it yet. Gonna figure out how to route the cable when I pull the shifter section.

Can you look in the ipods Settings/About and note the number of songs. Then look on the Entune and see if the numbers match. Mine are exactly 10000 songs off. The ipod says 19402 songs and the Entune says 9402. Weird. Is yours the same? TIA.
