What is everyone using to mount an iPad? I'll only be using the ipad mount on the trails so I have an active map with me and I'll also want it for my girlfriend so she can watch movies while we're on road trips. Love the idea of that tech deck for the second gen but cant find anything cool for the first gen.

I’m looking at fabricating a mount for an ipad in my truck too. Centered on the dash, just above the A/C vents.

Ha, I spent all day looking at mounts and scratching my head for ideas before deciding I could just fab up something better for my needs myself also

I'm using a couple RAM mounts for my stuff. Details mostly in these posts:

Adding a Ram Mount to the #%@#$@! A-pillar.
Where are you? Adding APRS to the Ham Radio Comms
Mod Wars - USB charger blocking Ham Radio Communication

Essentially, for the A-pillar mount, it was:
And for the center-dash mount, I used:

With all that, I ended up with this as my cockpit...

Happy to answer any specific questions!

You did an excellent job with your A-pillar installation!

You did a better job when removing the steering wheel to access those f***ing screws that hold the grab bar to the A-pillar. Me, I'm left with an easy-out broken flush with the screw head...:annoyed: and with little (if any) desire to remove the steering wheel. But I guess that day is coming 'cause it's been eating on me for the last few years... so wish me luck.

That's where I have my x-grip mounted for my phone. I was thinking of doing the same thing on the other side for her, but also want to be able to use it for maps on the trails.

Is that Uniden good? I have a cheap $40 cobra in the same spot. Also, I used the bendable arms from Ram so that my phone doesnt go behind the steering wheel like so

One more thing you might consider - though I've heard mixed reviews of these: Panavise Custom InDash Mount for Toyota Tacoma '98-04

I opted not to go for that because I find that looking "down" to the level of my head unit is too distracting for "important navigation" - when wheeling, etc. I wanted something that was more "up in my field of view."

I really like the Uniden PRO 520XL. Obviously fits well in there, and it's the same unit that most of the folks I adventure with use, so if something goes wrong, we have lots of interchangeable parts and can trouble-shoot together. It was in the $40 range when I bought it as well - looks like it still is ~$42 today.

Not a bad idea, but this is partially for my girlfriend to watch movies to.

Well, our cockpit looks a lot alike now. Hahaha. I have my X-grip RAM mount on my A pillar, a suction cup RAM mount for my ipad in the center and I have my Cobra CB that fits in the same exact place due to compact size. Also swapped out my shit radio for a Pioneer single din and added Sirius XM as well. Super stoked. Lol
