Hello fellow TW people. Hope you all had a nice Christmas and some time off to relax.

Anyways, I’m going to go look at some Tacomas today (should be exciting as I don’t have one yet) and I have seen people talking about using Invoice Pricing to take to the dealer for a better deal.
Basically, how in the world can I find the invoice price or a close number to one so that I can hit the dealer with the facts?

**if it makes a difference, I will primarily be looking at ‘17s

Most people are getting their trucks about 10% off MSRP

Yep. Just use the 10% rule and that puts you in the ball park.

Just bought a '17 TRD Pro last week. It was one of just 3 vehicles left in Georgia. Needless to say, not much room for negotiation. Also, dealers are marking UP 2018 models in our area. Saw one with a sticker of $50K!

I got an 18 (OR DCSB 6MT) for under invoice a no $599 dlr fee. I called around and asked for the "internet sales dept" to get quotes. The local dealers couldn't get that low so I drove an hour to a volume dealer and scored the deal. There's a thread "what are you paying for your 18s" or something like that here...

Bought my 2017 trd off-road in super white without the tech package for 32500. Great deal I think

To add more detail to my post...

My process was a little more elaborate as I knew what I wanted.
    1. I looked at the websites of all the local dlrs to finds tacomas spec'd about where I wanted them (I had to accept a few extra options I didn't necessarily want, and you likely will too)
    2. I used this thread to calculate MSRP/invoice on the trucks as they were configured on the dlr's lot (I used excel to make the math easier on mult vehicles)
    3. I called for the "internet sales dept" and asked what's your best price you can do on Tacoma X (giving the specific one they showed on their website).
    4. Repeat...

Here is a thread about 18 prices: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/how-much-are-you-paying-for-your-2018-tacoma.519521/

I was thinking about a 17 but I wanted a manual (harder to find) and keep in mind that although 18's are more, the V6 models now include the tow package where the 17's cost extra. Of course you should be able to score a much better deal on a 17 but a volume dealer on an 18 might be competitive against a crappy dealer on a 17.

Be willing to drive a reasonable distance and use the internet in your favor and send out emails to all the dealers you’re willing to drive too. You can negotiate while watching some tv.

That sounds like a great deal! I just left a dealer for my first day of Tacoma searching, test drive, + talking numbers. The best they came up with for a ‘17 SR-5 was $34,590. It’s a 2WD dc/sb with tow pkg, pred steps, tonneau cover, and bed mat. Kinda sad that it’s more than what you paid for your off road . And it’s 2wd and 2 trim levels below. Lol gotta love stealerships

I walked out of the dealer 2 times got tired of them trying to rip me off on my trade in. So I came into the finance office gave him my numbers of what I wanted and he said no. So I left and two days later they call me like hey we can meet your request come get it.

I used Edmunds.com when I purchased my '17. Goto the following link and select the trim level you want. Then put in your contact info and dealers will email you trucks that fit your criteria and what they'll sell them for. Then you can compare from your living room.

My advice is to not go into the dealer unless you are JUST test driving models to get a feel for what you want.

Hold off talking figures until you do the following below:

Find the truck that fits your liking. Note the VIN and all of it's packages (if any).

Now don't be afraid to drop that VIN on all your local dealers via email. They can easily figure out where it is currently parked.

Tell each dealer to give you their best price on this VIN out the door. Out the door includes every single thing they want to sneak into the price including tax, title and registration. By being very specific that you want the absolute "out the door price", you won't have any surprises.

Dealers can and will swap vehicles between lots and between some states.

Each time you get an email reply from a dealer with a lower number, tell the other dealers to beat that price.

Don't talk about financing or trade in until you have a rock bottom price on said vehicle. You can even throw a lower number at them at this point. Worst thing that could happen is that they say no. Be persistent, and see where it gets you.

Now, ask them to apply any student or military discounts that may be available to their OTD price if they haven't already included it in their offer.

If you don't have a trade in, and do have you loan pre-approved, or full cash in hand, schedule a time to see, drive and purchase the vehicle.

If you do require a trade in, tell them now that you will agree to purchase this vehicle pending a drive in it AS WELL AS a fair trade in allowance that is within KBB/NADA values for whatever your vehicle realistically rates.

You can evaluate your trade in yourself or post up here the specs on it and I'm sure you will get some ideas of what it should trade for.

OP - I keep hearing from experts that the best time to buy a vehicle is after January. Of course I heard about this after I bought my truck in November of last year LOL.

I have noticed that the current Toyota advertising campain runs through Jan 2. If you have the stomach to wait to go to the dealershits after Jan 2 then that might be a winning strategy on top of what everyone is suggesting.

So really if you started the spreadsheet and email dealer bidding war for your business tomorrow, you could do this all without being in any hurry. If your not getting what you want the way you want you can still kick back sitting pretty in your easy chair without any sense of urgency.

Another thing is have an idea of what you really want vs what you really need. Keep both options open because you might be surprised what you end up with. This happened to me. All I needed was an SR but I walked out with an SR5 for not much more.

The only real reason to get a sense of urgency is if you get a great deal that makes you pop all over the place.

I just bought a 17. It was only 8% off MSRP, but it had 0% for 60 months and got a good price on trade

Brought her home last night. Got a little over 2000 off and this one came with a cover and the wheels I really wanted. I’ve had a Tacoma for 1 day and I already love it

    Great advice in here.

I'm in this process at the moment looking into trade in options. Still picking my jaw up off the floor after looking at a $5-8k loss on my like new 2017...

Unless you'd like to buy it from me for a fair price!

I'm looking at purchasing a 2017 Toyota Tacoma right now too after my previous car got totaled on the 14th. There are two Toyota dealers in town hopefully I can get them to give me a good deal.
