    Hey everyone,

I posted this in the 3rd Gen forum, but figured this would be very useful to you guys as well!

I recently started a company called Hitch Vault, I created an aluminum lockbox that can store your keys securely on the outside of your vehicle. This is useful for anytime that you don’t want to worry about losing your keys while hunting, fishing, or doing anything else outside.

It is made of 6061 aluminum which is then anodized, the top is milled and has a stainless steel insert. All the tolerances are very precise so the box is water and debris resistant.

For more info you can check out the website https://hitchvault.ca Or comment below!

That’s a good Idea but I’m afraid I would set that thing on my bumper while hooking up my trailer, then forget about it and drive off. Black things like that sitting on you bumper become invisible.

Yeah true, if you’re going to tow something I would just pull it out and put it in the back seat or something. You can leave it in all the time or just put the vault in when you need it.

I have a hitch vault but removed it because it would get caked with mud from offroading and would have to use pliers to rip the thing open.

My mistake, it wasn't the exact brand but it was a hitch style lockbox thing with 3 dial numbers and a little tab you push to open it up. That one sucks.

Hey! I think you mean the “hitch safe”. If you’re going to do some wheeling in deep mud I would just take it out quick. It only takes a few seconds, then after just put it back in when you need it.

With the hitch vault there are no mechanical parts to get gunked up, once the pin is removed just slide out the vault.

It would be nice to do some testing and fully submerge the vault in mud and see how it holds up.

While I know branding is good for a company, I think your product would be better without the HV on the end. Knowing somebody has spent enough $ to have a small safe outside their truck can make people put in the extra effort to break into it.
Without the HV it just looks like a hitch plug when not using a hitch.
Definitely nice having a secured spot to hide your keys on the vehicle though, instead of hiding it on the frame or on top of a tire or something.

It would be cool if there was a version that integrated with a hitch mount/ball. Then you wouldn't need to remove it to tow and it would just look like any other hitch.

That was my thought. Make a tube that fits inside the stinger tube. There would need to be some provisions for different wall thickness stingers so that is doesn't rattle.

As mentioned above, having HV on the plug, just screams, "there's something valuable in here".

I like the concept, and as a long distance runner this would be perfect for not having to run for hours holding my keys. What makes this better than the "Hitch Safe," which is half the cost?

I don’t have anything against Hitch safe, I just don’t like how it uses little tabs to hold your keys in there, and it appears to be folded steel. With the Hitch Vault it’s extruded 1/4” aluminum, which won’t corrode either. I also designed this so install and removal is very quick and straight forward, there aren’t a bunch of pieces that can be lost or fail.

Hey if any of you second gen guys are interested in a hitch vault, there’s a thread with a lot of info in the 3rd gen section as well!

could one not hacksaw the hitch pin and slide it all out?
or just sit there in the dark and try 9999 different combos, (doesnt take as long as you think).

not trying to be rude. just curious. seems to me this is just asking for something to get stolen. if it was a bit more discreet i think it would go a long way.

Not rude at all, you’re welcome to buy one and try Haha. The pins are hardened steel and I’m pretty sure a file won’t be able to remove material so you’d need a Zip disk or a carbine blade to get through it. Not an easy job.

As for trying to guess the combo. How about you buy one and I’ll set a code. If you get into into it in less than 30 min then I’ll give you your money back.

meh, i am not interested in this type of product in the least but i am fairly certain if you dont have some type of mechanism that keeps you from attempting the code quickly i could pop a randomized code in less that 30 mins. im not going to purchase your product to prove this to you however, and as for the 30 min thing, a thief does not necessarily have that time restriction.

i like the idea but i think your just asking for problems with this design. as soon as someone knows you have a device used to store "valuables" then its only a matter of time.
