I am experiencing an intermittent issue where sometimes my fan will not turn on using any of the speed settings, OFF, 1, 2, 3 or 4 (max). After a little while, the fan will start working again.

I'm trying to figure out what part(s) I should replace to pro-actively resolve the issue.

It's likely not the fuse, as once it blows it would need to be replaced.
It's likely not the blower motor itself, but I may be wrong.

What would be the most common cause of this intermittent problem? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

    This is a 2007 Tacoma.

Just replaced my resistor and pigtail this past weekend. Blower started intermittently working on High only.

If you're flexible, it's a quick job. In the passenger's floorboard there's a 2-pin plug on the blower motor and a 4 pin plug in the back left on the resistor. Pull both plugs and check for burnt connections. Sure fire way to tell where the issue is.

Mine ended up being the 4-pin plug. Replaced the plug and the resistor. Took about 30 minutes total.

Awesome, glad to know this is something small. I will replace the resistor and pigtail as it looks like one of the pin holes is considerably browned, might be a connection issue at this point.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply!

I'm in Canada, do you have a link for the new style resistor? I'd like to grab that if I can. Thank you!

Awesome, thank you for all the help. I’m going to get right on this and will also grab the updated pig tail too.

If you get the replacement connector the wire colors are not exactly the same. They should be connected as such:
Green with Yellow Stripe to Green.
White with Black Stripe to White with Black Stripe,
Blue with Black Stripe to Blue.
White with Blue Stripe to White.

Note: This is not my image and I did not make those shitty crimps. I would have soldered them and then heat shrink.

I’d start with wiggling the connector with the blower on and see if you can get it to come on. I did that and just scraped the contacts and got it back working fine.

This turned out to be our problem. The bad part of this issue was the fact I had to tell the service department where to look for the problem. (They replaced switch first and it worked 2 days).
Seen it here in another post.

If it doesn't work on high either when it quits then it's not a resistor (the resistor may be bad too but is not the only problem) because on high the resistor is bypassed, only the first 3 speeds go through the resistor.
Most likely the blower, melted blower pigtail, or melted connector at the switch.

    ^^ correct

Important distinction between "stops working at all speeds" or "all speeds except HIGH"

The resistor/connector repair is common and if it hasn't been done it'll need it sooner or later... but if it truly loses ALL speeds it sounds like bad brushes in the blower motor. Next time it happens tap on the blower motor and see if it starts spinning again. Jimmyh could probably provide part numbers for the brushes if you want to take it apart

As far as the Brushes goes I would just measure the width etc... and purchase them elsewhere. I doubt Toyota sells the brushes alone.

That's a good point, I will definitely check the other connection points to see if it's possibly the blower. Thanks!

Highjacking this thread for the same issue. Ruled out the resistor because it wouldn't work on high.

Do what exactly makes these not very good? My truck had it replaced before I got it (and sub 100k), and it went out again, I looked at the 2 prong power line, and it's nice and burnt up. I ran out of time and didn't finish the job, but I had already bought a new motor, just trying to go fast so I'm cutting corners parts hanging. With this being the 2nd repair, I can see how they used butt connectors to cut the wire to make the repair. I don't know if it's just the connector that maybe loosens from expanding and contracting or something and over time with a higher amp load will cause it to burn up. And because the connector is nice and melted looking, I think I'm just going to cut both ends and use one of those 4-10AWG underground splice kits with a heat shrink tube around it.

If the motor sucks, I wonder what else is a close enough fit that an adapter could be made.

That's pretty much exactly what happens.
The connectors and wiring on modern vehicles are barely adequate in many cases for the amount of current they need to handle, any more than that or a little bit of a bad connection from corrosion and they get hot and melt.
It's not a probelm exclusive to Toyota trucks, I see it all the time on Ford, GM, and Dodge as well.
