My friend and I somewhat hastily decided yesterday that we would proceed in the interior blackout project for my newly acquired 2003 Tacoma Exta Cab. All is well and actually, most of the pieces look OEM black. We're having some trouble on the dash, one of our final coats has a strange finish over by the drivers side of the dash. Just looking to see if anyone knows what could be causing this.

Also this paint is really thick, seems to drip if it's not upright, I came up with this red tote solution after the first coat. may have to sand and restart, what y'all think?

It's 44°F, won't stop raining, have I have work tomorrow

The cool temperatures are probably not helping out. Looks great.

The blotches on the driver's side of the dash are caused by "blushing". This happens when there is too much moisture in the ambient air when spraying. You may be able to ameliorate the situation by using a heat gun on a low setting to see if you can get the moisture to evaporate. If not, you have to scuff it and start over. Looks really good otherwise!

I did one more small spray on this area outside, then moved the piece back inside with 2 space heaters in the general area (not directly on it) and looks like it dried up nicely.

It's definitely a task but this Dupli-Color Trim & Bumper is insane. Here is some of the other trim pieces and glovebox, and the carpet back seat we did with the carpet and vinyl spray, a bit stiffer to sit on but nothing but a 12" sundown is sitting in the back anyway. I was very surprised how OEM looking turned out.

Looks good! I do wonder how that stuff will do in 180°+ temps in the summer with the windows up. Be interesting to know how it off gasses in a closed up heat environment and if it has any issues. on appearance!

If something bumps or scrapes it, will it rip the paint right off? … looks good otherwise

So this is really just part 1, We kinda started with one of the harder part first, the whole dash. Front pillars, doors, back seat trim, center console, carpet, wheel, and other little pieces are part of the list. I've herd I may need to grab some 4Runner parts like gear shifter (which also feels loose i need to fix that too). I would like to swap out the seats at some point, I saw a guy use some Subaru Forester eclectic seats with heat too, so I'll look into that. I'll be able to update as I get funds for all this.

Yes, we forgot the fuse panel I gotta go get another can of paint lol.

    Looking nice and crisp!

It's got to be a good feeling driving it now that you have done all of that work. Dashboard replacements are not easy. I know, I may have to remove the dash on my '06 to replace a possibly leaking A/C condenser and I've been hesitating because of the amount of work involved.

    Keep up the good work!

Not something I ever would have considered doing, but the finish looks nice. I can imagine the next owner is gonna be pretty confused if they ever try to look up the factory trim color

Looks really good! I'm curious how this handles the heat and everyday wear and tear because I've considered the same thing since picking up my truck. Not a huge fan of the tan interior in my truck either, especially considering the exterior is red with black accents.

I did this to my 98 about 10 years ago or so.

    It’s held up great.

For trim pieces that do not have any contact it still looks like the day I painted it.

The high contact areas will need touch up every couple of years (ie the arm rest on the center console, etc)

The center console and armrest(s) are next on the list and that's the one we are kinda scratching our heads on. It feels like a different material and I don't feel like the paint will last on those surfaces.

I used Duplicolor Vinyl and Fabric dye on it.

it held up okay but truthfully I don’t see any topical application holding up in the long run for such a high traffic/contact area.

Now the rest of the console still looks a brand new paint job, even the cup holders.

I did most of my front dash on my 2nd gen using SEM paint. Did ton of prep and all that and mostly it has been okay. It is not holding up well in high traffic areas. Eventually when I get around to it I would spend way more time on prep sanding and roughing it.

You also want to use very light coats on all sprays and ensure you are using an adhesion promotor and the right one for the type of plastic. I did all that with prep and still hav some areas that have scratched with use but most of it is fine. I still have several pieces I have not gotten to.

I also did my headliner with some SEM Paint/dye in the poor mans job. I was not super happy with it but once installed in the truck you cant tell as bad and goes well.

This is def a PIA to do but just takes a ton of time to get it right and may require some resprays. If you are not in a hurry it comes out nice.

@Gigabyte1024 check out SEMs site. They are various material. Some is Vinyl and some are diff plastic types. Prep is pretty similar but different cleaners and different promotors will help you here. That part for me was the hardest part and I am still not 100% I got it right. For the Arm wrests on the doors I was going to remove and put on actual leather or vinyl since that is a higher traffic use area.

Oh shit it’s already installed. I kinda agree with adding UV protection. In future I would recommend adding a coat of semi gloss clear. Otherwise looks great.

I need to dig out some better photos but the pillars, grab handles and the lower front area was done. I did do one door card but messed up on the arm wrest so I have a different one installed at the moment. Paired up with some S5 Seats. Tossed in some rear clazzio cover to cover up the rear seat.
