Hello, I've seen similar threads to this one, but am still confused, so here I am.

I recently bought a 2007 Tacoma and am going to replace the factory radio with an aftermarket radio. I have all the parts needed. I am having a problem determining whether to use the Dimmer or Illumination wire from the harness to the radio. The head unit is a Sony XAV-AX5000. The wiring harness is a Metra 70-1761.

    The issue is:

    - The metra harness lists the Illumination wire as orange
    - The metra harness lists the Dimmer wire as orange/white

    - The radio lists the Illumination wire as orange/white
    - The radio does NOT have a wire listed as a Dimmer wire, nor is there an orange wire.

NOTE: To clarify the issue, the Illumination/Dimmer wire color schemes do not match.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My goal is: to have the radio dimm when the headlights are turned on.

My question is: Should I connect the orange wire from the harness to the orange/white wire on the radio? Or should I connect the orange/white wire from the harness to the orange/white wire on the radio?

My initial instinct would be to first try connecting the orange wire from the harness to the orange/white wire on the radio, since both are listed as "Illumination". If that does not work, then I would try connecting the orange/white from the harness to the orange/white on the radio.

I don't think testing either scenario should cause any issues and can easily be swapped if needed, but I thought I would check here first. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

Use the illumination wire, it should be on the main harness. There is sometimes an orange/black on the small plug of the Metra harness, the one that has green and purple speaker outs. That’s dinner.

You want orange illumination on the big plug.
