I’m going through my new to me 1st gen and updating everything and getting it on a maintenance schedule. I noticed it has an Innovative performance chip. I don’t know enough about them to know if this is a dumb question or not, I don’t really know that I trust a performance chip and am leaning towards removing it and I have 2 questions 1. Is it worth leaving on? 2. If not is it as simple as undoing the crimps that’s it’s crimped to the o2 sensor wires or will just unplugging it cause some kind of issue? Thanks for the help y’all

    Picture of said "performance chip"?
Most of those "performance" and "fuel economy" devices are gimmicks.

Do you mind posting a picture of it and how it's wired up?

Like previously mentioned there are absolutely ZERO "performance chips" available for Tacomas. Especially the first gens. If what you're saying is accurate about it being wired to the O2, then it's most likely just fooling the ECU into thinking it's lean and making it dump more fuel "to create more power". Fun fact... It doesn't.

    That's the MAF sensor...not the O2.

I know exactly what thing is doing... It's crap. I would remove it and repair the factory wires.

It's trying to fool the ECU (similar to what I explained for O2) but with the either the MAF signal or the intake temp signal to get the ECU to richen up the mixture.

You'll probably notice an increase in fuel economy after removing it and resetting the ECU.

If you can tell me the wire colors that it is tapped in to, I can tell you exactly what circuit it's trying to alter. In case you're curious...

One looks to be red or orange (bit faded and hard to tell) and black and the other is green and yellow. I really appreciate the help! Sorry I’m advance I’d this is another dumb question, do I have to do anything to reset the ecu other than just let it sit unplugged overnight?

You don't have to let it sit unplugged overnight. Just pull the ECU fuse in the fuse box under the hood for 5 mins. That's all I ever do on my first gen. Works every single time. You don't even lose your radio presets that way. :D

Don't need to reset anything, all it's doing is skewing the intake air temp reading. Once it's removed it will read as it's supposed to.

Take those T-Taps out and put a bit of liquid tape over the holes in the wires so they hopefully won't corrode away if they haven't already.

I just realized that it's not even intercepting the signal, just merely "tapped" into the wires. So yeah @op you don't really have to reset anything. It won't hurt if you do, just not totally necessary.
